Serious question: Joint Health

Recommended Posts

Alrighty, a serious question about joint health. This past summer I tore my MCL and did ACL damage, I didn't have to have surgery, but I did have to spend quite a bit of time with an Ortho, wearing a hinged knee brace, etc.

Well, fast forward to now, I still have problems running distances and still experience pain. Thus I can't re-establish my PLC contract due to not being able to pass a PFT (and the weight I've gained while not running has sucked).

Any tips or advice for joint health?

I'm trying to get running again (that thread about it tonight really got me longing to be running again). I had been cycling until this past November, my bike was stolen. I had also been "running" on those elliptical trainers at the gym, no knee pain, but my legs would cramp up really badly (waaaay to short of a stride).

What sort of prognosis did the doctor give you? Are your expectations reasonable?

If I was in your posistion I would go to the swimming pool and tread water and do yoga. 5 minutes of treading water is supposed to have the same cardio benefits as running 3 miles. I think you mentioned something about powerlifting recently; I would avoid that. Focus on rebuilding strength slowly in your knee, less weight more reps.

That's my own dumbass opinion. See what your doctor thinks.

"Any tips or advice for joint health?"

Rizzla papers are better than Zig-Zags, and a little cardboard tube helps to avoid burning your lips.....
Or so I'm told....:);)

My Ortho expected me to get back to full use no problem. I had spent time doing some rehab, I thought everything was doing well, until I tried to go running again. Yeah, I have started back liftting weights (after an unrelated law off), although I'm still not doing any sort of heavy compound leg work (squats, etc), even though I am dead lifting.

I haven't done Yoga in well over a year, nor have I done any sort of *real* swimming in a couple years. Thanks for reminding me, I really want to get back to those. B|

Once I'm done with this damned paper today, I'm going to go get a quick mile in to see how things go. I haven't tried in a couple weeks, maybe it'll be better this time. *shrug*

I don't know if it has helped, but I am taking glucosamine and chondroitin and have slowly been able to start running again. Oh yeah, the official military stand on that is you could get mad cow disease. (Hell, I may already have it.)

Also increased low impact (bike and plan to increase swim) workouts.
Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics.
