TB99 0 #27 March 21, 2003 That's the thing ... I just kept running on my shin splints ... then finally, it got to the point where the shin splint would hurt so much I literally could not stand on the leg anymore. That's when I asked a doc about it, and he said I was one more run away from having a stress fracture. I never got it, obviously, but I can imagine they hurt a LOT more than shin splints (the same feeling as one, but way way more painful). I got mine from bad running shoes ... changed those bad boys out FAST. At that time, I never thought to change em as often as I should have! Trailer 11/12 was the best. Thanks for the memories ... you guys rocked!
Zenister 0 #28 March 21, 2003 Quote Today was nice, i ran outside for the first time in months. I usually run on the treadmill, don't like running in snow/cold. I also love running at midnight in the summer, anyone else like that? I usually do 3 miles in 24 or so, so Mary you're lapping me! one more tangent... Does anyone else who runs alot notice that it hurts your vertical jump ability? I play good volleyball, and i need to stay at the max of my jump, one of the reasons I don't go longer distances. (Yeah I got white girl hops to begin with, but trying not to let them drop to credit card hops) i also do intervals to mix things up a bit, and incline when indoors... i think it depends on how you run, if you always run your most effecient gait then i think your right because your averaging your stride with your turn over..i like to focus on 'bounding' alot i love those jumpy shoes with the elevated toes they really helped add distance and burst to my lunge when i was fencing to work the calves by pushing off... i once 'ran' a PT test skipping the whole way..2 miles in 15ish min..just to prove i could.midnight runs rock but lately i've been places id rather not try them i would rather run a fast 2 to 4 than anything. any longer than that and i get bored..____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. KawiZX900 0 #31 March 21, 2003 could be improper streching too, that is affecting the way you stride, and how hard you are bringing your feet down. bigger stride is less work. Ask a high school track and field coach to take a look at your form. Or if you have the time and the nerve, find out the email address of a local college coach, "odds are they'll know what they are talking about. and then ask em to give you a 5 minute look on form , and email all you pressing issues with running to them. A lot of the kinesthesiology books have authors emails in them too. and they'd probably give you advice, if you let them use your as an example in their next book , that way you'll have a e-coach Accelerate hard to get them looking, then slam on the fronts and rollright beside the car, hanging the back wheel at eye level for a few seconds. Skyrose7 0 #33 March 21, 2003 maybe that has something to do with it. Some person told me to take shorter strides because it is less work. Maybe I am not stretching enough. Maybe I am not resting enough. Maybe I am not drinking enough water. Shheesh! I have a few things to work on. All in all though, the running still feels really good. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The mind is like a parachute--it works better when it is open. JUMP. Skyrose7 0 #35 March 21, 2003 remind me not to get that. eeek! body maintenence is important!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The mind is like a parachute--it works better when it is open. JUMP. MaryRose
staticnewbie 0 #36 March 21, 2003 Yeah, body maintainance is important, but I should point out that there is an unbelievably large number of people who overpronate (used to be called having flat feet). Try www.orthoheel.com (I don't know how to do clicky), and get the sport insoles if you commonly get stress fractures. I only found out I overpronate after collapsing in the street with 4 broken metatarsals 12 miles into a 13.1 mile run (Great North Run training). Avoid stress fractures at all costs - they will put you out of action for about 2 months if they are bad, and stop you jumping (or landing) for about 3. If you want to improve your times on 5 or 8 mile runs I recommend a treadmill. This has a softer surface than concrete, and the fact that it is constantly moving will improve your rhythm and technique no end. I used to take about 50 mins for a 5 mile road run, after using a treadmill in training 4 times a week or so I can do it on the road in 38 (and I'm not particularly fit). Hope some of this helps. Vallerina 2 #38 March 21, 2003 Hello! Yeah, I don't know much about running, but here's a decent website that freebird recommended to me. I've been following their 5K training program (because I'm weak and that's all I can do), and I also lift weights how they recommend (I think it was 2 sets 15 reps) and my stregth and endurance has improved dramatically. www.runnersworld.comThere's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning

I'm still so new to this as well. Freebird runs a lot I think so she might be able to tell you some good times. Slotperfect as well I think. I'm still working my way up as far as times and miles. I appreciate the info on the shoes tho. I have crosstrainers for the gym since I'm doing a lot of weights as well, but my shins hurt like a bitch running outside with them so I'm trying to figure out what to get for specifically running now that it's getting so nice out. There's a Nike outlet closeby so I'm hoping for something in their line . I've heard Pegasus is good?? Pammi
SkyDekker 1,465 #40 March 21, 2003 SkyRose, I would recommend to talk to the shoe store sales person, but go to a store specialized in running. I am only familiar with the ones up here in Canada, but there must be some near you. I just started running two months ago if that, but abolutely love it. my personal best on 3.12 miles (5K) is 29.23 minutes. I know I can do much better, but just takin' it slow and trying to build up. You are right though, running rocks........
Deuce 1 #41 March 21, 2003 Quote i convert them to my shit shoes and i get new running shoes... You have special SHOES for that?!Mary, I had to quit running when I ruptured both my fascia, the cartiligy-kinda-muscle thingie that runs from your achilles to the ball of your foot. Your times are very good! If you are experiencing some pain, you might consider walking every other day until your bone density comes up. Impact exercise will increase your bone density, but too much impact exercise will cause pain, and sometimes even tiny fractures and shin splints. Walking hard with hand weights can get your cardio up there with running cardio, and it's way less impact on your body.

steve1 5 #43 March 21, 2003 My wife runs about five miles, almost every day. She buys a lot of running shoes. There may be better ones on the market, but Saucony are very reasonably priced. She orders them out of a running catalog. Shin splints are no fun. I got these from running on pavement, in combat boots, in the army. Good shoes are important. kevin922 0 #44 March 21, 2003 Okay I have a question too --- hopefully I don't need to start a new thread to get some answers.. I'm out of shape, trying to get back in shape, I have never been a big runner but the particular thing i'm training for I need to run at least 2 miles in 14 minutes.. which for you other runners i Know that isn't much of a challenege but for us non runners it is. I can do 1 mi on a treadmill in 7 min w/o much problems so I think getting to my goal isn't going to be TOO bad if I just really get to it. Here's my question -- i'm the type that "sets a goal and works to achieve it" -- so when running i'd set the goal of getting to 2 miles.. only problem is i need something to look at.... so, does anyone know of any good watches or devices that tell you how far you've been and other nifty features? At minimum i want to know how far i've been.. other things that are optional are heart rate monitoring and time stats.. any other tips are cool too thanks! kevin
DanDruff 0 #45 March 21, 2003 I bought a heart rate monitor last year, the polar m52 and i love it. you set up a target heart rate zone, which it does auotmaticaly. and you just start running when you fall out of that zone an alarm goes off letting you know you need to pick up your speed or if you exerting your self too much the alarm goes off telling you to slow down, that only happend once. I know several runners who use Microsoft Streets and Trips for this purpose. You can map out routes and it will tell you exactly the distance.
KawiZX900 0 #47 March 21, 2003 something that helped me when i got into running was this.when you think you cant go any further and are getting ready to stop or slow down, imagine a grappling hook coming out of your chest going 50-100 yards further, anchoring and pulling you along. it may sound stupid, but it really works. it shuts off the quitter voice in your head. Accelerate hard to get them looking, then slam on the fronts and rollright beside the car, hanging the back wheel at eye level for a few seconds. SkyDekker 1,465 #48 March 21, 2003 Quotesomething that helped me when i got into running was this. What helps me is running 10 and 1. Run for 10 and then walk for 1 minute etc etc. Started by building it up from 2 and 1 to 5 and 2 etc etc Now I can easily run 30 minutes straight, but I actually have better times running 10 and 1.
