An interesting article.

It was an interesting article. This is a country which was, to a great degree, settled by folks who had the chutzpah to move thousands of miles away to make a new start. It's not surprising that there would be a lot of mavericks. And bucking the trends and rules can be very effective. We all jump out of airplanes :)
The counter to that is that not everyone wants to live in a competitive, maverick-driven society. Which is OK, and doesn't make them worse, any more than a competitive, dog-eat-dog approach can be OK for some.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

Of course, NASA doesn't possess any of those traits, right? :P
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Heck no! Those astronauts are all sweet little puppy dogs, always looking out for other people first.

I'll have you know I typed that with a straight face, too:S.

That said, they're not all macho fighter-jock types, either. Many of the mission specialists are, in fact, largely scientists (albeit with personalities).

Scientists with personalities, pah!
Next thing, you'll be trying to tell us about engineers with a sense of humour...;)
