ltdiver 3 #1 March 26, 2003 Been sick with something likened to the flu since Sunday evening after jumps. Started with an irritated ear, then progressed to a head cold on Saturday evening. Then Sunday, on the drive home from the DZ it hit hard. Yuck! Trying to nurse myself back to health, and having to drag myself into work 'cause we're a few people short right now (one off having a baby, another promoted to a Director position, and other one off on vacation). Question....what nutritious something did your mom make you to eat when you felt ill? Hot tomato soup and toast is what I remember from my childhood. Really, really good...but there must be more (taking on my third day now and looking for other things to ingest). Help! ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
Michele 1 #2 March 26, 2003 Chicken soup. I dunno why, but it really works. Mom would also make me eat spicy things if my head was clogged - things with tabasco, or lots of onions or tons of garlic. Or if I really felt bad, all three at once. Cleared my head. And don't forget to drink tons of water...it flushes the system out. SpeedRacer 1 #3 March 26, 2003 Depends on what it is. If it is strictly respiratory & doesn't affect your stomach, you can do a lot. I had a very severe, persistant chest cold once that I got rid of by eating LOTS of garlic. Just remember these microbes are little vampire-like bastards & can be warded off with garlic. So I cooked a big pot of homemade chicken soup with pretty much an entire head of garlic in it. Got better real fast. Towards the end, where I was going to work, because Ifelt stronger, but still had a rattle in my chest, I brought in ham sandwiches for lunch in which I had thinly-sliced up RAW garlic cloves. Fuckin' virus never stood a chance. Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
SpeedRacer 1 #4 March 26, 2003 OH, I just remembered something else, from a more recent time. There is this Korean restaurant near my house that serves this HOT SPICY beef soup that will just clear you out! Sinuses, as well as making your eyes water. It is actually known to be a cure for the cold etc. in Korean culture. I can't think of the name right now. It is strange that the Korean restaurant is on the same block, back-to-back with the veterinarian....I wonder what's that about.damn, that's the same place I take my cat for his annual checkup. should I be worried? hooked 0 #5 March 26, 2003 Since I grew up without my Mother, I think we were on our own, since my stepmother, didn't do anything for us. I had 3 other sisters, we kind of watched out for each other. But the tomato soup and toast sounds really good. It does depend on what 'ails' you. Garlic, yes! Chicken soup, yes! Get better soon! skymama 37 #8 March 26, 2003 Growing up with Yankee parents, my mom always made us drink Vernor's gingler ale when we had upset stomachs. I can't go anywhere near ginger ale now!She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
Brokeneagle 0 #9 March 26, 2003 Sprite or Ginger ale if yer stomach's affected, saltines or toast as well-- anything your body is craving (for the most part) if yer stomach's ok- protein can be hard to digest, and fats can accelerate nausea- anything with vitamin C acceptable? Feel better soon- Brokeneagle. I'm really very gentle, no matter what my kung-fu teacher says... he is giving me a reputation I do not deserve!

sunshine 2 #11 March 26, 2003 Cream of Wheat and toast. I used to spread the cream of wheat on the toast and make sandwiches out of it. Good stuff!! ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug!
lauras 0 #12 March 26, 2003 Eat ONE cat and everyone's on your back, fer chrissakes. Arlo, would you please enlighten this guy about how we prefer dogs? Anyway, the soup you're referring to is (phonetically) "suh-long-tahng" and it's the theraflu of Korea. It will roto-rooter your entire gastro-intestinal tract and wipe out any nasties as well. Prepare to sweat and feel a whole lot better within 24 hours.

JohnJug 0 #14 March 26, 2003 I grew up in Indonesia, so I always got Ramen when I was sick. But the authentic Indonesian kind that is spicy enough to kill anything trying to live inside of you. That always worked well. You come from nothing. You go back to nothing. What have you lost? Nothing!
ltdiver 3 #15 March 26, 2003 Never really understood about the chicken soup thing. What's up with that? Anybody? The garlic makes sense. However, I'm looking for something that will sooth the stomach and give the body something to start getting some energy back within. Cream of wheat and toast. Now, that sounds good. I'll try that today. Not sure the stomach can handle spicy stuff right now, though I -really- love the stuff when I'm well. Keep the list growing. We might lick this yet. Thanks! ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

jceman 1 #22 March 26, 2003 Quote Dunno about any sorta sick food... but I swear to god orange juice will cure anything. Drink it... lots of it. Cold? OJ. Sore throat? OJ. Flu? OJ. Cancer? OJ. It's a vitamin C thing I was sick alot when I was a kid (chronic bronchitis) so I have a lot of 'sperience with this. Jewish penicillin (chicken soup) is very effective, the hotter it is the better. My favorite thing, however, was a 50/50 mix of 7Up and OJ over ice; it almost made getting sick something to look forward to.Really, the biggest thing is to stay hydrated, but it sure doesn't hurt if the liquids taste good. Unfortunately, the liquids should not include good stuff like beer, because the alcohol actually contributes to the dehydration. Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money.
