wmw999 2,589 #1 March 28, 2003 I judged at the Houston regional science fair today: I've been doing it at either the district or regional level for 8-10 years now. If anyone is looking for an opportunity to volunteer that's not too time-consuming, this is a great one. If you ever want to get a good idea of what kids are capable of, I highly recommend it. Yes, there are plenty of projects out of books (particularly at the district level). But it's so cool to hear kids talk about the things they're curious about, and to figure out how to satisfy their curiosity. And they're all so cute, too. Last year the winner in the division I judged designed and built his own EEG machine; then an isolation chamber because of the interference; then he normalized his readings, then he validated its accuracy, and only then did he conduct his experiment. Absolutely knocked my socks off. Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence.
