TB99 0 #1 April 2, 2003 Got this in email today: QuoteWhen in England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of empire building by George Bush. He answered by saying that, "Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return." It became very quiet in the room. Trailer 11/12 was the best. Thanks for the memories ... you guys rocked!
Guest #2 April 2, 2003 Don't know if that's an actual quote, but D A M N !!! "The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."
AndyMan 7 #3 April 2, 2003 Quote Don't know if that's an actual quote, but D A M N !!! Unfortunately it's false. Trinidad, Greneda, Puerto Rico, and even Hawaii are all good examples. Editied to add: According to snopes, it's actually true! http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/powell.php _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. cgross 1 #4 April 2, 2003 I heard this also on 710AM radio in NYC. Could be true. I suspect it is seeing as that staion uses reliable sources (AP, rueters) during their moring talk/news program. Chris

jtval 0 #7 April 2, 2003 here another email....who knows if its made up or true?...anyone? You probably missed it in the rush of news last week, but there was actually a report that an offer of a reward had been published in a Pakistani newspaper to anyone who killed an American, any American. So an Australian dentist wrote the following to let everyone know what an American is, so they would know when they found one. An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani, or Afghan. An American may also be a Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache or one of the many other tribes known as Native Americans. An American is Christian, or he could be Jewish, or Buddhist, or Muslim! . In fact, there are more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan. The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them chooses. An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God. An American is from the most prosperous land in the history of the world. The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes the God given right of each man and woman to the pursuit of happiness. An American is generous. Americans have helped out just about every other nation in the world in their time of need. When the Soviet army overran Afghanistan twenty years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country. As of the morning of September 11th, Americans had given more than any oth! er nation to the poor in Afghanistan. Americans welcome the best -- the best products, the best books, the best music, the best food, the best athletes. But they also welcome the least. The national symbol of America, The Statue of Liberty, welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed. These in fact are the people who built America. Some of them were working in the Twin Towers the morning of September 11th, earning a better life for their families. I've been told that the World Trade Center victims were from at least 30 other countries, cultures, and first languages, including those that aided and abetted the terrorists. So you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did. So did Tojo, Stalin and Mao tse-Tung, and every bloodthirsty tyrant in the history of the world. But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself. Because Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American. Pass this around the world. My photos My Videos
AndyMan 7 #8 April 2, 2003 C'mon guys, do some simple research before posting these things. It's not like it's hard. This one is false. http://www.snopes.com/rumors/america2.htm "This was written by Peter Ferrara, an associate professor of law at the George Mason University School of Law in Northern Virginia. Mr. Ferrara's commentary was originally published in the National Review on 25 September 2001." Kinda changes the tone of it, doesn't it? _AM__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. I still thought it was a nice piece, tho "The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."
flyingferret 0 #10 April 2, 2003 he was refering to Jt's piece. The one on Powell is 99% accurate.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.

jlmiracle 7 #12 April 2, 2003 I would hope you go after the media and inform them of ALL their errors when they report a skydiving accident. If something makes you feel better or laugh, does it really matter who said it. The bible is quoted all the time, in the wrong context. Whose to say the bible wasn't really written as some made up mother goose stories. JudyBe kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. Tf15 0 #13 April 2, 2003 Quote Quote he was refering to Jt's piece. The one on Powell is 99% accurate. Kind-of - it's a half-truth, more like 50% accurate. The official transcript is at the World Economic Forum web site. What Powell said was correctly quoted in part - the quote was "snipped", but it was not the Archbishop of Canterbury who asked the question, and the question wasn't what the "quote" said it was. Three times is enemy action
AndyMan 7 #14 April 2, 2003 Quote I would hope you go after the media and inform them of ALL their errors when they report a skydiving accident. No, I see a pretty compelling difference between people who blindly forward the crap they find in their INBOX , and people who do their best to accurately report on events they don't understand. That said, I do report factual errors when I see them. I've been the cause of at least 3 retractions in major newspapers so far. However, most errors made in reporting skydiving fatalities are analytical, not factual. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
jlmiracle 7 #15 April 2, 2003 So you are saying that statement is crap? Well, with all the bad crap that's put out there, it's nice to see some good crap once in a while. Until you can stop the media from reporting crap, there will be no end to crap. Who is to say that snopes.com is correct? who are their sources? Maybe these guys need to run the country. They seem to know it all. JudyBe kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
AndyMan 7 #16 April 2, 2003 Which statement? The Colin Powell one? It's mostly true, just out of context. The "Australian Dentist"? Yeah, that's crap. If you want some more "nice crap", I'd be happy to write some fiction for you. I guarantee my writing will in fact be 'crap'. I'm told I write like crap frequently. Who's to say snopes is correct? Certainly not them, actually. However, they have got a stellar reputation, I've never heard of them ever being wrong, they're not commercial, are as close to being unbiased as possible, and they use documented research to explain why something is right or wrong. Most importantly though, they're actually willing to stand behind their statements, unlike the authors of most of the crap I find in my INBOX. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
