Gawain 0 #7 April 3, 2003 Quote If Portland does succeed in passing a law that classifies protesters as terrorists, here are a few signs that might come in handy: Bill if only you'd put in a smiley face or two...then I wouldn't honestly wonder if you're being serious or not...jeez...First, it's OREGON that's considering the law IIRC. Freedom of assembly does not guarantee the right to hinder the rights of others. Blocking traffic not only hinders the rights of other, it endangers the lives of the people driving cars, those driving around them (never mind the protesters). Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with the proposed law either, but have you seen Oregon drivers? They're amongst the worst in the nation! (and I speak from my own observation ) On the other hand, there is no better place to see if it will work, Oregon. A very socialized society, but the government there manages to stay out of everyone's way, despite the highest rate of spending of any state in the Union. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! harryskydives 0 #8 April 3, 2003 Hey Bill: I live right outside Portland, and work in Portland. The protesters are on the other side of the river so I do not have to drive by them. The Mayor here is about as liberal as they come. But even she seems to have tired of them blocking bridges, breaking windows, (Macdonalds, Starbucks, Cars with american flags). There is no need to pass additional laws, just enforce the ones on the books. If you really feel it is OK to use the roads by laying in them. Then it must also be alright for me to drives the speed limit with out paying attention to what is laying in the road. Their right to free speach ends with my right to go to work, for emergency vehicles to travel, and definitely their free speech has nothing to do with breaking windows. Don't run out of altitude and experience at the same time...
D22369 0 #9 April 3, 2003 Damn......you have been here.......Oregon drivers drive fast in the slow lane, slow in the fast lane, park in handicapped places and in general exhibit poor driving skills, all the while convinced that they are the exception....... Try getting stuck on I-5 or 205 during rush hour.........not no fun......... Roy They say I suffer from insanity.... But I actually enjoy it.
Gawain 0 #10 April 4, 2003 Quote drive fast in the slow lane, slow in the fast lane, I've yet to see a single Oregon driver "drive" fast...ever... Route 26, I-5...jeez...if I left PDX to get to Skydive Oregon on a Saturday morning, I'd spend half my time fighting the car-created-ruts in the road while hoping one of the three-abreast cars in each lane will move faster than 65 so it won't take an hour to get there!! So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! billvon 3,121 #11 April 4, 2003 >There is no need to pass additional laws, just enforce the ones on > the books. I agree there. If they do lie in the middle of the street, move them and give them a ticket for jaywalking. >If you really feel it is OK to use the roads by laying in them. Then it > must also be alright for me to drives the speed limit with out paying > attention to what is laying in the road. Uh, no. Whether you are mowing down kids crossing the street, people lying in the street, or even an errant hippie hitchhiker, saying "I'm obeying the speed limit, I don't have to pay attention to the road" does not give you any immunity from prosecution. They still get a ticket for jaywalking, you go down for attempted murder. Like you said, enforce the laws on the books. >Their right to free speach ends with my right to go to work . . . Correct and if they cordoned off your house so you couldn't leave, you'd have a point. You have no right to speedy travel to work, though - and they _do_ have a right to protest even if it snarls traffic. If I used your argument, I could have all the construction crews out here arrested.

If I used your argument, I could have all the construction crews out here arrested. Just trying to point out the dire consequences if you get to pick and choose which laws you obey. (betty excluded) The construction crew is not breaking the law. There are many other laws than just jwalking which can be enforced here. PS: Can you explain how breaking a window for peace works?? Same way beating up a veteran against the war or killing a peace protester works i.e. it doesn't. The vandal/assaulter/murderer goes to jail. http://www.wvgazette.com/section/News/Other%20News/2003033140 http://www.palmbeachpost.com/auto/epaper/editions/thursday/local_news_e3288779e08e429d009d.html
DYEVOUT 0 #23 April 4, 2003 HHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMMM. I try to have an open (albeit right wing) mind, but defacing an original WWII, M-1 Garand poster! - I only hope the photoshopper had the opportunity to operate the equipment depicted, and revel in it's exquisite simplicity, accuracy, and lethality (and weight!) Plus - the sound of that clip zinging out the top of that monster after all 8 of its "passengers" have been sent on their way is nothing less than SWEET !! ----------------=8^)---------------------- "I think that was the wrong tennis court."
