Need story ideas

I need help.

What would you like to read about in the features section of your local newspaper?

Or, have you run across any interesting ideas/trends/clubs/etc. that you are interested in knowing more about?

You know who could provide quite a bit of insight would be Michele... ;)

So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Seriously, invterview a team training for Nationals. Good human interest story. How they got started, what they each do for a living (obviously pick a team that has real jobs, not the sponsored ones, people relate to others in the workforce).
What do they give up to jump? What have they gained? ect.

I like the "behind the scenes" type articles. Stories about how many popsicles are made a day at the local ice cream plant, working in some small/unknown industry (air traffic controllers, DJ's, surfboard shapers, etc...) or some other unknown items of interest.

Of course you could always right another article on extreme sports. It would give all of us a chance to tell the same stories again.B|:P

I like to read about local kids and the cool things they're doing - through and with their schools, clubs, churches, and on their own. There's some awesome young people out there, doing some awesome stuff.

I also like to read about people who are "beating the odds" - the welfare mother who's going to college, the disabled person who's overcome physical obstacles to do something cool, etc.

Basically, positive stories about positive people. :)

"Where are they now" articles are a lot of fun, too, especially when they're about folks who haven't ended up in the gutter or on drugs (unless they're back out again).

For instance, I think the former child actor Jackie Earle Haley (who did a spectacular job in several movies in the late 70's/early 80's) is an advertising producer in San Antonio now.

I would like to read about how I'm spending the millions I won in the Powerball lottery. Unfortunately that story hasn't been written yet. >:(

Until now.

"Lucky Lotto Winner Is Exceedingly Generous"

Jim has lots of friends, some of whom he's never met in person. They liked him even before he won milliions of dollars in the Powerball lottery. They like him even more now.

The smell of jet fuel fills the air at the dropzone as three Dehavilland Otters wait for the 60+ skydivers - all Jim's friends - to load up for the next skydive. It's Jim's lottery "boogie" - he's buying the whole days skydiving for everyone.

"Like my new rig? Jim got it for me," says Sky Bytch as she shows off the pretty parachute rig on her back. "Love it! Check out mine!" says Sun Shine, turning to display her pretty new pink and purple container.

As the day winds down, Jim brings out the checkbook once again and orders up a catered dinner and kegs of expensive microbrew beers. The jumpers party until dawn, then put their new rigs back on and jump some more.

At the end of the weekend, Jim smiles as he climbs into his new Ferrari and heads off to an ocean front Jacuzzi suite in Atlantic City with a hot blonde skychicky. "See ya next weekend!" he yells as he waves out the window and burns out of the parking lot. . .

(to be continued)

I would probably something exactly like this too. What good is money if you can't spend it?

See? I know you purty damn good for someone you've never met, huh? ;)

That's what I'd do with it too. Well, except for the hot blonde skychicky part.

Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll.

And if that ain't gonna fly, how 'bout kids who are making a difference ... you know-- we hear much about the youth who are always causing trouble ... storys about kids doing great things are always good reading.

Of course, who reads a paper when they can watch the news on tv???;)

Since they just screwed you over on your Easter vacation, I'd suggest a story on local good vs. bad employers, and what makes them that way. If that would normally be a business section feature, concentrate on the family-friendly stuff like part-time and, um, vacation predictability >:(

What's your deadline? In other words, how much time do you have to put the story together?

I like nice investigative pieces, but those can take up a bit of time.

Maybe go down to the library and find an unsolved story from 20 years ago and find out where the major players are now.

Or take a look into some local pork project and find out where the money went.

Or take a look into the local KKK or other hate group. (Ok, that's a bit risky, but it always gets ya noticed.)

The "Local Heroes" that are serving the "Local Community" on Holidays while "WE" all enjoy our day as family members.
THose that people may not realize are out there sending out the news or waiting for that call that makes the "news".

Well I need an excuse for a trip ... maybe I can come and bring a news crew along, too! Skydiving stories look so much better on tv than on paper, don't they, Jess?!?:) (At work, I produce a tv newscast) We did a story a couple of years back about a wish foundation here in my city ... young man, 20 or 21, dying of cancer -- his last "wish" is to skydive ... so my dzo takes him for a tandem. My friends Al and Tim fly video, and we have a newscamera on the ground. Anyway, it was a great day, a good skydive, made a very moving news story -- and the fellow died a few weeks later...:| sad, but a very compelling story.
