Are you implying that there are degrees of OK to things like hitting a woman? That there is a margin somewhere?

I don't imply anything.. Grow up..

You telling me to grow up - that is really rich.

The Rhino is an African animal, known for it's short temper, bad eyesight and it's habit of charging anything it does not completely understand blindly. It has an excuse though, it is just a dumb animal.

What's yours?

Again, I do support the war. It is a separate issue. But your urge to "kick ass" constantly really gets my back up.

The Rhino said:

"If you are a Marine and you don't regard flag burning as a sin of all sins than you aren't really a Marine.. Or you just went in for a college education.."

Ummm, the words came from your mouth dude...

I am not trying to get in any kind of pissing contest here, but I would be very interested to know what you did in the Corps, for how long, etc...

I am not asking in order to make any value judgements or anything, since as a former reservist I would be a hypocrite to say that a Motor T dude is any less valuable to the effort than an 0311 infantry guy. Just kinda wanna know where you are coming from in terms of time in, combat experience, etc.

Before this becomes some reserves vs active duty debate, let me defer to the active duty side of the house in terms of overall level of hardship endured (i.e. going on a Med Float for 6 months is much more trying on the family and stuff than going down to 29 Palms for 3 weeks for sure).

Every Marine is a rifleman first..

Even as a resurvist you should know that. What did I do in the Marines? I was Comm.. Small Computer Systems Specialist. Also competed in the Marine Corps Pistol and Rifle competitions for 6 months.

That was 4 years. Did 2 years active reserve time after that.. And 2 years inactive after that.

Really doesn't make a difference..

And if you tell me you don't regard flag burning as a sin you are lying..

I would hope that every Marine is a representative of the U.S. Government first. Then a gentleman. That's just me.

I regard burning the flag as disrespectful; disrespectful to those who served before me, disrespectful to those who serve now, and disrespectful to those who will serve in the future. I do not, however, regard burning the flag as a sin; I view flag burning as a right, a right I'm damn proud to have. But that's just me.

I agree with everything you said. Of course I know every Marine is a rifleman first. I humped up and down enough hills even though I was an artillery dude...

However, you are in NO place to say that I am lying when I say that I don't regard flag burning as a sin. I don't. Sorry. Just don't. Much more important shit to worry about in this country...

I think we just gotta agree to disagree on this one.

Um...I burned a flag once...

Well actually it was cut up into 20 pieces and several of us burned it...

Are you pissed at me yet???

:SIt was at a Boy Scout summer camp and the flag had been retired. Random scouts were selected to put the tattered flag to rest in the Fire Bowl.

I got to raise the new flag the next morning B|

1) The next time you see an adult talking (or wearing a hat) during the playing of the National Anthem ... kick their ass.

8) Next time Old Glory (U.S. flag) prances by during a parade, get on your damn feet and pay homage to her by placing your hand over your heart.

Well, I'm not taking my hat off or putting my hand over my heart, because that's not how it's done where I come from. I will, however, stand at attention and not move, flinch, scratch, whatever until the anthem is over or the flag has passed. That goes for any nation's anthem or flag.

11) "Your mama wears combat boots" never made sense to me ... stop saying it! If she did, she would most likely be a vet and therefore, could kick your ass!

I always thought that was pretty stupid, too.

I find it interesting how ignorant people are of flag etiquette, even when they mean the best, and how you left that out.
- The flag is not to be worn as a T-shirt or boxer shorts.
- It is not to be printed on a door mat.
- You don't drape yourself in the flag, no matter how famous a rock star you are.
- If you want to wear it, wear a pin or patch properly attached to an article of clothing in a position of honour.
- If you want to wear or display two or more national flags, they should be displayed in equal positions of honour, although generally the host nation flag should be flown on the left as seen by the most viewers (this is called "right of line").

I could go on, but these are just a couple peeves of mine.

Also, it's not really showing respect for the flag to put one on your car antenna and leave it there until it gets flapped to colorful threads - which seems to be happening around here a lot.

This is a truly fine thread but honestly:

Who cares???

We might as well start discussing the meaning of the word "virgin" in the Bible as some claim that in the original "virgin" just ment a young woman which Mary definitely was. But was she a virgin? Politically it makes a lot of sense to proclaim her that but was she in fact? And was Josef her husband or her lover? And why did she give birth in a stable? And who was she in the first place? And was Jesus the real Mosiah or not?

... and the ones on the freeway overpasses.

Sure, there's lots more. It's all available on various web sites too.

Another peeve is using a national anthem as a ring tone on cell phones, unless the user intends to stand at attention and let it play before answering the phone.

Come to think of it, the Morse SOS is misused as a ringtone. It has specific meaning, people!

I did elementary school in Brazil, and I remember my third-grade teacher, when teaching us about flag and national anthem etiquette, telling us how well Americans did as a rule. We were, of course, learning to stand at attention while the Brazilian national anthem was being played. I always remember her saying that, especially when I see a motel with a tattered flag, or a car dealership with one sitting out bedraggled in the rain.

I'm not nearly as against using the flag as a symbol of protest, as I am against treating it carelessly. If one uses it as a symbol of protest, that's still respect -- you know you're making a strong statement. One that's likely to garner a strong reaction. If you wear it on your backside as a patch, that just says you don't care in some ways. It's not respectful or honoring it.
