my beer cutaway

Recommended Posts

ok so sunday it finally happened, had my first cutaway. was doing a 2-way tracking dive, ended up messing up the exit, so we didnt get very far, broke at 6 because i was demoing a smaller canopy (sabre 190) waveoff and dump at 5. opens perfect. im flying around following behind the girl who i jumped with. did two spirals to catch up to her level, then when i went to overtake her i checked to make sure i was clear all around, then buried the right toggle, about 3/4 of the way into the turn my canopy bucks then stops moving while i keep moving, as soon as i felt myself go weightless for that second or two i knew i was screwed:D. so i look up and see about 5 line twists about halfway down the risers. then i feel myself start to pickup speed and see the leading edge of the canopy spinning in line with the horizon and me on my back>:(

at this point i was at about 2grand, all i thought was, dont waste your fucking time, so i chopped, my rsl fired the reserve, felt the freebag come off my back before i even had my hand on the reserve handle.
beatiful reserve opening (pd176) alti check 1500ft looked around saw my main and freebag, setup for my landing, plf'd it:P

freebag was in the middle of the field near the peas, main landed in a tree near the swoop pond.
upon landing the first thing i did was let out a loud PHUUUUUCK, cause i just realized that was ANOTHER case, and i had just bought one and a half the day before. AND i had dropped the cutaway handle:$ (those greedy bastids had my name up on the board for owing a case before i even got back to the hangar!:P

im kinda glad i had the cutaway when i did though, because its better that i had it now, so that i know im capable of dealing with it and i wont have to wonder forever.

Almost had one on my hornet last week - trash packed it and it opened in about 3 foot and just kept winding up. Of course, I was wearing my RW suit with booties for the first time in ages, and was having a hard time stopping the line twists going in. canopy was just starting to spin as I started kicking out. Was seriously thinking of chopping, but I'd pulled at 4k and had lots of alti left before my hard deck so I kept it and had a nice landing :)

... All too true. DON'T taunt the cut away gods:P

That happened to me a couple of months ago after teasing Vinney (the Anvil) about his cutaway.. Soon After... Oh Shit.... CaChing....

Good job on saving your life. Besides the beer, don't forget you owe the rigger a bottle of his favorite alcohol.. Good stuff.

Once the plane takes off, you're gonna have to land - Might as well jump out!!

almost did the same thing on the demo 190.sabre on saturday

I was cranking the turns and I felt the end cells collapse and the motionless "oops" happened. LOL
I let up and pumped the toggles as I let them up.
and no prob....

I did that on almost all my dives just to get the feel of the limitation:o

I gave myself a line twist on my pd 190 in exactly the same way that you described your experience. Only went 180 degrees and it came out quickly so I wasn't in the same situation as yourself i.e. spinning and losing altitude.

flew very conservatively for the rest of the ride down.

ROFL - I did the EXACT same thing on about my 16th jump or so. I think it was my 2nd or third jump on my first rig (Sabre 190), cranked the toggle left, cranked it back right, and the damn thing spun up like a top! lol Luckily I was still at about 2,500 so I just kicked out of them. That was about 2.5 years ago, but I still think of it often when I'm under canopy... good times! ;)

Blues!

You did pull the reserve handle didn't you?

You mean you can get spinning, diving, line-twists of death™ on something besides a highly-loaded elliptical?!

...um, in a word, yes. It took great talent and efort, but I DID manage to spin up my Raven II (220). Once. I haven't tried to be that stupid in quite a while.

I'm guessing you did a reverse canopy turn? That's covered in the Category G portion of the SIM. Right above it, the performance turn entry is talked about. Both subjects indicate line twists can occur depending upon how aggressively the turn is entered, and will happen more often in a reverse canopy turn. It's all about center of lift and inertia.

Unfortunately the center of lift thing is not really discussed as much as it should be. Brian Germain and I had a long discussion about it once. Next time you want to scare yourself a bit. Open high and pull the right toggle down aggressively and watch the left side of the canopy. As the center of lift transfers quickly to the right side of the canopy, the left side goes limp. The suspension lines droop backwards. Considering the inertia of you--the mass suspended under the canopy--it's reallllllly reallllllly easy to spin up the canopy. Slack lines=not a good thing. Now the slack on the lines will equalize as the center of lift moves back toward the center of the canopy and your weight increases from Gs, but you get the same thing leaving the turn, if you do it fast enough. Point being: enter the turns slowly and leave em slowly. That's why I now like carving turns (compensating with the opposite toggle to maintain the center of lift nearer to the center of the canopy) rather than hard toggle turns. That's also why toggle hooking is a scary proposition, since you have to start lower too.

I guess my turning and learning point was jump #69;), when I was just digging the shit out of reverse canopy turns. They never spun me up before on my silhouette 210 and I could actually get above the trailing edge of the canopy. I played with them from 7k right down to 2k when it twisted right up in three linetwists and a partial collapse. I immediately kicked them out, but hmmmmm, time for some reevaluation...

Be careful out there...

that was the first thing mary at square 3 told me when i was getting gear.;) she has been watching my landings and giving me advice and she suggested that i try the safire

and it IS definetaly faster, on my first landing i got about 5 feet of turf surf then i went to go to run it out and i was STILL going too fast, i did my best roadrunner impersonation but i wasnt quite fast enough!:P but hey, at least i had great accuracy:P

ha ha ha... on my student jumps, while jumping a mighty mac, i thought it would be fun to turn faster so i wrapped my steering lines around my hands like 3 times and cranked down... riser slap and like 3-4 line twists with like 5 jumps. you can bet i didn't do that again for like 1 jump...ha ha ha:ph34r:

Do you want some SWEETSAUCE with that?
