some good news!

Recommended Posts

Some of you may remember me posting about my cousin last year. He's been a diabetic since he was 7; he's 35 now. His kidneys failed a few years ago and he was put on a list for a kidney/pancreas transplant. He was lucky enough to get the new organs before he got too weak to handle the surgery.

The new kidney is still working away, but unfortunately the new pancreas failed late last year so he had to go back on insulin. He was put on the list for another pancreas but they also found some damage to his heart so they weren't sure he'd be strong enough for another transplant surgery.

My mom called me last night to let me know that he was in the operating room getting another new pancreas. She called again this morning to let me know that he's doing well, is in ICU, and his blood sugar is way down - which means the new pancreas is working. :)
Once again, during a time of great sorrow a family made a decision that may well have saved my cousin's life. My family's deepest gratitude goes out to this family. What a gift.

That is great news ! :)
If you use Kazaa or another P2P program, you should do a search for a song that may cheer him up and bring a smile to his face:

Heywood Banks - The Pancreas Song

It is pretty funny. Congrats to your cousin again. :)

Do all states have the optional "organ donor" printed on your drivers license??

Always been a no-brainer for me.

I've chosen that since I've had my license. Some people choose not to do it for religious reasons. I'm an atheist, but the way I see it, even if you are religious, if you're dead then your "soul" or "spirit" is on its way wherever it is going anyway.

If I was in need of a transplant, I hope somebody would donate for me, so I might as well sign up to be a donor myself. Religious or not, I still believe in the "do unto others as you'd have them do unto you" as a simple part of common sense.

Here is the reason I don't sign that. If you read the fine print on the Colorado one, it says "organ donation OR medical research". I did some further investigating and found that a number of corpses go to medical schools for dissection.

I know it's silly, but that gives me the willies.

If I go in skydiving, ya'll can let my family know that I want my organs and tissue donated (if possible), but NOT for medical research. I've already told them, but they are an emotional bunch and I don't trust them to react with clear thinking if that happens :S I need to get off my lazy butt and put it in writing as well. It would be nice to think that I could help save other people's lives.

Not sure about other states, but TX will give you a little card to fill out at the DMV and then give you a "donor" sticker to put on your license. I've been an organ, tissue and cornea donor since I was 16. The way I look at it is if I go I might as well help others who might need it.:$

Thanks for sharing the good news bytch...sending good vibes for your family.

I don't sign mine either, but those close to me know that i will donate my organs. They can take anything they want EXCEPT my eyes. For some reason that freaks me out.

Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.

Thanks for some good news!! I'm so glad to hear your cousin is doing well. I hope he continues with his recovery. What an amazing gift!

Maybe one day, that grieving family will take some comfort knowing that a piece of their lost family member will live on thanks to their generosity.

Its worth saying again guys, make sure your family knows what your wishes are if something should happen to you! Signing the back of your license is not enough in most states!

sorry if you have to pick out the sand and if it takes 10-14 days!

Sandy good vibes work just fine for me! ;)

Thanks everyone. I'm going to send Spot (my cuz) the link to this page so he can see that people he doesn't even know are pullin' for him. :)
Regarding being an organ donor - make sure your family knows your wishes, and THANK YOU!
