Gawain 0 #1 April 25, 2003 The new "Orbitz" series of commercials with the marienettes is f@*#^$^@*%^($(#! stupid The creators should bleed from the eyes and die. I can't think of any others at the moment. Too bad...I wish AdCritic.com was still around... So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! Gawain 0 #3 April 25, 2003 Ah yes..I should clarify. Adcritic.com used to be a free service. They went under and their resources were bought. You can no longer view those commercials without registering and paying. Now, $70+ per year.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! indyz 1 #4 April 25, 2003 These probably only makes sense to Chicagoans. Any of the Eagle Man commercials are really bad. Victory Auto Wreckers. "710 East Green in Bensonville, near O'Hare." Not really bad or dumb, but they've been using the exact same same commercial since the early 80s. I must have seen the door fall off of that guy's car 10,000 times by now. Empire Carpets has some really lames ones, too. Dancing elves singing about next day carpet delivery, anyone?
Snowflake 0 #5 April 25, 2003 When I lived in NY there was guy named Crazy Eddy and his prices were insane......I thought I hated that guy but when I moved to TX I kinda missed him. He had that Howard Cosell thing you don't realize you like him till he's gone
Gawain 0 #6 April 25, 2003 There's Crazy Gideon's here in SoCal...makes Crazy Eddy look tame...I remember those commercials too. AirMail 0 #7 April 25, 2003 That commercial is a take off of the The Thunderbirds, an old BBC series that is showing on Tech TV now. Parick-- It's never too late to have a happy childhood. Postal Rodriguez, Muff 3342
Gawain 0 #8 April 25, 2003 I remember the Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds were cool sh*t. These Orbitz ads suck. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! BoobieCootie 0 #9 April 25, 2003 Sometimes I wonder about commercials that suck. They sure get my attention. I might even spread the word by saying something about it. But would they get my business? I'm thinking if they're intentionally sucky for that purpose
WFFC 1 #10 April 25, 2003 QuoteEmpire Carpets has some really lames ones, too. Dancing elves singing about next day carpet delivery, anyone? So I'm sitting in a comedy club in Denver a few years ago listening to a comic from Chicago making fun of late night commercials. He brings up 588-2300...to a single laugh and me yelling Empire from the back...----- ~~~Michael
MC208B 0 #11 April 25, 2003 there's some asshole on the tube here in Portland that is selling mattresses and he's wearing one too, meanwhile, little kids are saying "my dad's gone crazy" and yes, they're right. Of course any ads with little kids in em suck

I can't think of any others at the moment. Too bad...I wish AdCritic.com was still around... This stuff must look really goofy to anybody under 35. I think they're charming, even if they're a bit hokey. I find them to be nostalgic because they are recreating the signature look of master puppeteer Gerry Anderson & his "Supermarionation" characters as depicted in Fireball XL-5, Thunderbirds, Cpt Scarlet, Stingray, etc. Anderson and his miniatures crew went on to live action with a very unusual picture called "Journey to the Far Side of the Sun" (aka "Doppelganger")" in 1969; the UFO (1970) series (*very* 60's British sci-fi, and odd at times, but very interesting at times too), and (aargh!) Space 1999. One of these technicians, Brian Johnson, went on to be special effects director for Alien (1979). In short, the ad campaign is very retro, and is appealing to nostalgia in an effort to get attention. I can think of worse ways to do so. Those commercials were also very difficult and expensive to set up too, you know; but the thing about Gerry Anderson-style marionettes is that you either love them or hate them..."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."
