How long did it take for your first rig.

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering how long it took everyone here to get all their gear. I am still on student status and will probably be getting my gear at the end of the season, only 6 short months away up here in Can-ah-duh.

I started jumping in August 2001 with a college club. The next summer I went home to work, didn't spend any money that I didn't have to, and had enough cash to put a used rig together (no AAD) in time for the fall semester, with enough cash left over to keep jumping until I found a new part time job. According to my logbook, my first jump on my own gear was July 3, 2002, jump #34. So almost a full year.

6th jump. I took my rig to the DZ to have one of the instuctors look at it. I told him I wanted to jump it. He then asked me how many jumps I had. I told him 6 and the next thing out of his mouth was "Absolutely NOT!" Looking back on it...WTF was I thinking?:S He did agree that it would be a nice rig for me once I was off student status so I bought it. ahhh yes....what a fearless ignorant fool I was...3.5 months ago.B|

Ignorance is bliss isn't it.

I see here that someone had their gear before they started diving. If you're still looking at this post would you mind letting me know how you knew you would like it enough to keep with it?

got mine right around the time i finished my A too..

got a great deal on a complete rig that fits rather well given my height. (6'4)
just ordered my first custom rig..still debating what size canopy to get it made for..(got a week or two before its cut) since i'd like to get it so i'll have it for several years before wanting another..even if it means jumping my current rig until i'm comfortable enough to downsize

edit: i was one of the "before i started" basically i knew the first moment out the door off AFF1..after that it was just a matter of time and opportunity.

My DZO had a new student rig that was really perfect for me, so I demoed it on jump 13 and bought it immediately. It served me well until I decided to downsize.

Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money.

Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?

Soon..........

Seeing as my first jump was May 6, 2001, and I got my own main (and have been jumping it since October 2002), I suspect that I might have gotten everything together by the end of summer - sooner if God keeps sending me angels...

I'm hoping that some quirk of fate will take place and that I win that sweepstakes where you can win your purchases for a month. If that happens then I will have new gear very soon.

About 70 jumps, or 2 years. Really it took until I had a decent job (finished college) and the right deal came along.

Bought my canopy in pieces...in fact, Steve from SQ1 sold it to me. I bought it way used...in fact I sitl have that first set, with a smaller main then I had before. I just ordered a custom set just a few weeks ago.
