redtwiga 0 #1 April 30, 2003 Albert Einstein once posed a brain teaser that he predicted only 2% of the worlds population would get. FACTS: 1. There are 5 houses in 5 different colours. 2. In each house lives a man with a different nationality. 3. These 5 owners drink a certain beverage, smoke a certain brand of cigarette and keep a certain pet. 4. No owners have the same pet, brand of cigarette, or drink. 1. The Brit lives in a red house 2. The Swede keeps a dog 3. The Dane drinks tea 4. The green house is on the left of the white house. 5. The green house owner drinks coffee. 6. The person who smokes Pall Mall keeps birds. 7. The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill. 8. The man living in the house right in the center drinks milk 9. The Norwegian lives in the first house (the one on the left). 10. The man who smokes Blend lives next to the one who keeps cats 11. The man who keeps horses lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill 12. The owner who smokes Blue Master drinks beer 13. The German smokes Prince 14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house 15. The man who smokes Blend has a neighbour who drinks water. The question is, who keeps the fish? Don't hate me!

SpeedRacer 1 #5 April 30, 2003 Quote 4. The green house is on the left of the white house. OK, does this mean that the green house is next door to the white house, or does it mean anywhere to the left of the white house? redtwiga 0 #10 April 30, 2003 Oh well that's cheating. Sort of. Good job. Einstein never counted on the internet! I think figuring out how to figure it out is the real logic puzzle, like algebra, so this website kind of does the footwork for you.

SpeedRacer 1 #12 April 30, 2003 what, just set up a grid? I was doing that anyway on paper Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
redtwiga 0 #13 April 30, 2003 Quote what, just set up a grid? I was doing that anyway on paper Sort of yes and sort of no. Setting up a grid is the easy part. It's figuring out how to use it properly that gets tricky. If you want to see how, don't use the website, keep working on the puzzle. Prove Gawain's answer. SpeedRacer 1 #14 April 30, 2003 wait, it is cheating! when the clue says the guy who smokes blend lives NEXT to the guy who drinks water, you don't know if its to the left or to the right. but when you drag it from the website, they give it away. i'm gona see if I can figure it out without it. SpeedRacer 1 #15 April 30, 2003 ok what's the system? I got somethings eliminated, but now i have a page full of lines and circles... Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
katiebear21 0 #16 April 30, 2003 I've got the whole fricken office working on it! I got it in 15 minutes! Clever! Good thing I was a math geek in college! Don't want to give it away for everyone else but my answer checks out! Edited to say - Max you suck!!! I was terribly proud of myself! katiebear21 0 #20 April 30, 2003 Do you really want to know? Most of the clues were combined into two's and related. By using the different combination of two's you could quickly eliminate possibilities. I created five charts with two given clues each and then used the process of elimination! Not sure if it was really math but it sure as hell felt like it! I failed Combinatorial Mathematics twice in a row and finally passed with a C! SpeedRacer 1 #22 April 30, 2003 well, that's kind of what I did. I guess my mistake was making trying to do it all on one chart. ie, five columns representing houses and vertical rows representing color nationality cig drink pet I eliminated some things. Tell me: when it says the green house is to the left of the white house, did you assume they were contiguous? or could the green house be several doors down from the white one? I'm usually good at puzzles except for this type Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
katiebear21 0 #23 April 30, 2003 Contiguous... hint... the white house is all the way to the right. Katie Get your PMS glass necklace here
SpeedRacer 1 #24 April 30, 2003 see, ididn't assume that. that made it harder. and yes, if they're contiguous, I agree the white house would have to be on the right. I wish I could work out a system for these things. I can't find any useful info on the internet re. combinatorial mathematics. just ads for books & courses. splittail1 0 #25 April 30, 2003 I just used one grid and filled in what I could put down as sure things the clues. after that I could tell the one who smoked blend could be in three of the houses - I tried each combination until I hit a road block and started from the blend point again till I got it.
