Slowfaller 0 #1 April 30, 2003 Good morning everyone, I was wondering if you could provide an opinion on a PC my parents bought last night. HP 754N. From messing around w/ it last night it looks very nice, mind you I'm not computer savy. It burns CD's under 5 minutes and surfing DZ.com w/ dialup isn't that bad. Any opinions? Thanks in advance. Push 0 #10 April 30, 2003 Eh. It's alright. Nothing spectacular. If you want to play games on it, it's not that great, the video card is a little lacking. Don't expect to be running much Doom III. In other apps, it's got a good enough chip with enough RAM, so it'll work fine. The DVD+RW drive is a really nice part of it. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. Slowfaller 0 #11 April 30, 2003 Is it as simple as it sounds? I can borrow a DVD from someone and theoretically(sp?) burn that movie on a DVD/R and watch in on my PS2? --"Someday you will die and somehow somethings going to steal your carbon" -MM
indyz 1 #12 April 30, 2003 No. It is possible to copy DVDs but it isn't that easy. I have no personal experience but I gathered this from a conversation with a friend of mine who, umm, makes and sells perfectly legitimate backup copies of DVDs and software. Yeah. And PS2's without modchips won't play burned DVDs.
Push 0 #13 April 30, 2003 http://www.dvdplusrw.org/faq/faq_general.html QuoteDVD+R/+RW, DVD-RAM and DVD-R/-RW are all rewritable DVD formats, however, only DVD+R/+RW is designed from the start to be compatible with existing DVD-ROM drives and DVD-Video players, both on a physical as well as on a logical level. This means that a DVD+R or DVD+RW disc recorded in a DVD+R/+RW video recorder can be played in virtually all DVD-Video players or DVD-ROM equiped PCs, and that any DVD+R or DVD+RW disc recorded with data on a PC DVD+R/+RW drive can be read by most DVD-ROM drives. Looks like it. There's a list of compatible drives on that site, actually. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. Push 0 #14 April 30, 2003 Well, he already has that drive, so I guess the best way to find out is to try. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. indyz 1 #15 April 30, 2003 The problem is that DVD movies typically come on multilayer discs, and AFAIK, there aren't any consumer level DVD burners than can write more than one layer per side.

I took that from a webpage that supports this format, so of course they'll put it in the best light. It would be interesting to see him try to copy a DVD and see what he'll come up with. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. nathaniel 0 #18 May 1, 2003 my experience with HP (and every other whole-PC retail manufacturer) is that they cost too much. but then again I work with computers all day and wouldn't flinch if I had to re-seat a PCI card... the system you purchased is a bit of a generalist--it does not seem geared for doing anything particularly well but it isn't deficient in any major way (except the video controller...but only CAD engineers and serious gamers should care). Every now and then I spec out my dream system a la carte and of late it's been coming to ~ 1500 USD incl one or more monitors. That's not too much more than the 1000USD list price of this HP thingie without monitors. Since it doesn't sound like you had to pinch your bank account for it you're probably in good shape. It would have cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars for a comparable PC 5 years ago, and in 5 years it will be worth less than $100.nathaniel My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. Chris Although it sounds really cool to have your jumps (and other small clips) on DVD, you need to ask if it's really worth it. Sure, digitaze the footage, but seriously, I'd burn them to to SVCD on standard CD-R's. Cheaper, and length isn't a problem with short clips. It's your life, live it!
