leroydb 0 #1 May 4, 2003 just saw on the news: a climber had his arm stuck under a 2 ton rock and after days of waiting took his pocket knife and cut his arm off below the elbow. edit to add: He also had to repell 60ft down to a lower level after cutting his arm off..... ouch.......Leroy ..I knew I was an unwanted baby when I saw my bath toys were a toaster and a radio... cloudseeker2001 0 #3 May 4, 2003 he was in horseshoe canyon and climbing in a very small slot canyon in a very remote area.......................it could have been months before he was found. i have spent days there by myself and may have seen maybe one other person! when he was found, he was almost to the trailhead where he had parked his truck! i know this area very well and it is tough-i am suprised he made it that far! it probably got around 30 at night and 90 during the day with no breeze at all in the slot canyon and he was out of water for 2 days. in the canyonlands area, i drink up to 3 gallons of water a day and could not imagin no water at all for 2 days!......i think it was bad enough to cut off an arm for survival......no doubt. cuchulinn 0 #4 May 4, 2003 I would hope given the same situation I'd have the Stones to do it. Hopefully that part of the arm was already "dead" from lack of blood circulation that the pain of actually hacking it off wasn't that terrible. That being said.. that dude had HUGH Stones!!!! skycat 0 #5 May 4, 2003 quote from the denver post Quote Hudgins said the part of the arm Ralston had to cut off might already have been dead tissue, but that would not have made the amputation any less painful. "If he had put the tourniquets on early enough before he started cutting, he could have casued enough blood loss to taht tissue that it wouldn't have hurt as much," Hudgins said. "But there's no way it didn't hurt a great deal". Fly it like you stole it!
Guest #6 May 5, 2003 It's one of the ballsiest things I've ever heard of an outdoorsman doing! . Here's a guy faced with a situation that he has to act on, and he doesn't wimp out - he cuts his own frickin' arm off! However, if he was smart as opposed to tough, he wouldn't have been alone in the first place...just my $.02... "The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." BBKid 0 #13 May 5, 2003 Not a bloody chance mate. I need both arms, and I know I'm not mentally strong enough to handle that kind of disability. Ask me now and I'd say I'd rather die than do it myself. Get a doctor, anaesthetic and air ambulance, then yes - but a Swiss Army Knife, hell no. Amazon 7 #14 May 5, 2003 I remember a guy from USAF Survival School back in the 70's who hopped a Burlington Northern frieght train from Seattle area back to Spokane. Somehwere in one of the really long mile plus tunnels thru the Cascades the fumes got him and he slipped and fell from the car hauler he was riding and had his leg amputated. He had presence of mind to apply a tourniquet and then drag himself out of the tunnel and get help. Again not the smartest thing to have done in the first place but he did survive. Some people wish to survive others give up. You never know how you will react under traumatic circumstances till you are faced with them. TheAnvil 0 #15 May 5, 2003 I think we're all that tough in our own minds. I wonder how many of us would actually do such a thing. That is one tough hombre and I admire him for it. Kudos to that dude. If he wasn't a skydiver he damn well should have been. Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!! steve1 5 #16 May 5, 2003 There was a timber faller who was pinned under a log once who did the same thing with his pocket knife. I had an Alaska bush pilot tell me this story and supposedly it's true: Another Bush pilot flew a client in hunting. He landed his super-cub and the took off hunting. Somehow the client's gun went off shooting the Bush pilot in the leg with a soft point bullet. His leg was just dangling so he went ahead and cut it off. I imagine they also put a tourniquet on also. They later had to fly out of there, and he was the only one who knew how to fly. So being a resourceful guy he tied a stick to what was left of his leg so he could run the rudder pedals. He took off and landed safely. Alaska bush pilots are a tough bunch......Steve1
