Zennie 0 #1 May 6, 2003 Those of you who have known me for a while know that my ex forbade me from BASE jumping while we were married. Now that the marriage isn't an issue anymore I have to decide what to do with my wedding ring. I've decided that it has to be on a BASE jump. I'm just not sure which one. My very first BASE jump was last year's Bridge Day.... 9 days before my divorce was final. So there's sort of that "anniversary" element going out there. On the other hand, I've been dwelling about this WAY too much. I'm wondering if ditching it this coming Memorial Day weekend might not be a good way of making the symbolic gesture while getting it behind me quicker. There's an added symbolism given the fact that it would be over the Snake River. That makes it appealing as well. So whaddaya think? Where should I ditch it? And NO I'm not gonna hock it! - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

Maybe I'll have it melted down and made into a closing pin or into a tooth cap for my front tootha cause I'm a straight up pimp now "It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING

Unstable 9 #7 May 6, 2003 Pawn it, get a cheapo ring from a cracker-jack box, jump that in the memory. Hey, you could buy some nice stuff with that. sds "What are you going to do, release the hounds? wmw999 2,558 #8 May 6, 2003 Give it away to someone. Don't tell them the history, just give it away, and feel good about helping someone. It might help you release the past better than throwing it away. Or you can give it to a minister friend, and let him give it to someone who needs one. Or just toss it off the nearest bridge. Dont' give it too much importance -- how're you going to let go of the past if you've got so much invested in the ring? skybytch 273 #10 May 6, 2003 Memorial Day. Definitely. The symbolism all lines up, and you'll be happier if you get it done sooner rather than later. Plus it'll make for great video.

SkymonkeyONE 4 #13 May 6, 2003 Ted, when I divorced I put my very-expensive wedding ring on the keychain of my very-expensive chopper. I figure I have had it long enough that it's the one thing I own that deserves to wear it. I saw no reason to throw it away, but I know many other people think the object is forever bonded with the person or event it was originally meant for. Just my thoughts. narcimund 0 #16 May 6, 2003 When I went through this, I had a wedding ring with 8 diamonds on it. I had the gold melted into a new ring that I designed, but then had 8 small diamonds to get rid of. Ideas that came up at the time: Give them one at a time to waitresses in addition to their tip. In the middle of the night, epoxy them to the windshield wipers of my ex's new BMW. Donate them to the Cascade AIDS project (which I expected might get my ex as a client someday, given his habits.) Donate them to my ex's business's clients who he embezzled from. In the end, I bought 8 beautiful, artistic greeting cards and glued one diamond to a highlight in each picture, then wrote heartfelt thanks to eight people who helped me through the trauma of divorce. I suspect they never knew the diamonds were there, but that's a large part of my satisfaction. First Class Citizen Twice Over
Jessica 0 #17 May 6, 2003 Sell it and buy something BASE-related with it. I honestly think you're giving this object, and by proxy, Liz, way too much power with all this attention. I used to date a guy who had gotten divorced in the last couple of years. One day I looked at his backpack and omg his wedding ring was attatched to the zipper. I FREAKED. Hanging onto something like that is not the way to move on. But on the other hand, if you're way into symbolism, then I vote Memorial day. Skydiving is for cool people only

NewGuy 0 #22 May 6, 2003 My thoughts on wedding and engagement rings are that they should be returned to the giver. That is, if they were originally 'given as a token of the pledge' or whatever. If that is the case for you, you probably have a dimond ring that is owed back to you. Hawk that for a base rig.

Dude--are you crazy? There's only one thing you CAN do in all good conscience. You must travel through Mordor to cast the evil ring in to the fires of Mt. Doom from whence it came. And while you're there, I've been scoping the Northwest face of Mt. Doom, looks well overhung and probably about 2500'. Also, if you stop by the Wizard's place (the White, evil one) it looks like he has a tower there that's AT LEAST 1500'. I've heard from good sources that the wizard's tower has been jumped before though, so no first descent there--(Gandalf the Gay) I'm not sure it actually counted as a BASE jump, though. (I'd like to see you exile ME to the top of your tower you evil wizard dude!) Barring that, I actually run a ring disposal service, and seeing how you're a BASE jumper and all, I'll waive my normal nominal service charge, and give you a FREEBIE! Just PM me for the details. Deuce 1 #24 May 6, 2003 Zennie, my folks got divorced, I got Dad's ring with a bunch of other junk ( it was in a box of Korean War stuff). My wedding ring is way too big now, but sometimes I wear Dad's, cause it fits, and I remember how it looked on his hand when I was a kid. I kinda like Chucks key ring idea. I wouldn't do that, though, wouldn't want to scratch my Eurotrash crotchrocket
