Best Filesharing Software?

Recommended Posts

What's a good filesharing client? Kazaalite? Audiognome? What? I've been out of the loop since Napster died. Any recommendations that don't cram your computer with spyware and other crap? Thanks.
Oh, hello again!

Kazaalite is good, just make sure you get the real thing and not the regular spyware-infested Kazaa made to look like the lite version. It can happen.
Other than that you can check out eDonkey or eMule, they both share the same network and there are lots of pages with download links to working, verified files.
Also worth trying is WinMX- even though I haven't figured it out completely yet it seems to be a good source for music that's harder to find.

Yeh. Don't trust kazaa. Took me a long time to find and purge the brilliant digital spycrap they hide everywhere in your box. Practically a virus. And it persists...uninstall kazaa and brilliant digital stays right there, hidden, watching you. creepy.

I just started using the mIRC chat rooms. They are more difficult to use than Kazaa, but not nearly the viruses and you can find nearly everything. Problem is you have to do more searching.

There's a lot of crap that comes with KaZaa. KaZaa Lite is pretty much without it. But I don't really like KaZaa. Too much crap floating around. For quality stuff, try Overnet (the new eDonkey). The nice thing is that they have indexing services like ShareReactor where you can search for stuff. You then paste a special link (ed2k://) into your client and it'll download that file for you. You can be assured that you don't have a fake file (a file that has a title of one thing, but is something else, a problem that exists with KaZaa) and that the file will definately work.

Overnet has all the features KaZaa has, like downloading from multiple sources and checking downloaded blocks with checksums.

Very cool stuff; I'm very happy with it after I ditched KaZaa a while back and I highly recommend Overnet.

Cheers,

Costyn.

Well well, I downloaded this Overnet, did the "dummy install" let it install itself instead of doing the custom. I got ALL KINDS of spyware. Or I should say software I didn't want in my system. Added 7 process, 86 files, 4 different folders.. Well I deleted this ASAP.. Just be careful is all I have to say.

Hmmm... I apologize. I am truly sorry about this. I use the Linux console version, and it is free of spyware of any kind. I've never actually used the Windows client, so I was unaware that the Windows version did come with bundled spyware. [:/]

I'm just happy with the Overnet network. You can try eMule. It uses the eDonkey/Overnet network too. Its an open source tool (for Windows only, unfortunately), so I assume that it does not have spyware, seeing as it is not a commercial project by a company. But then again, don't take my word for it. I was wrong before. :(

Happy sharing nonetheless!

I kinda liked the Winblows GUI interface with the different info it gives you. I'll probably download it again and do a fresh install "custom" this time and not load anything I don't want. I'm afraid tho it still has software/processes I don't want running in the background. Will have to investigate again.

get "direct-connect" trust me on this one... it kicks ass. you get into different servers based on how much you're sharing with other users.

no more of that crap where some guy is downloading 5 files off you, but sharing nothing.

wait till you get into the 40gig sharing servers.... ohhhh yeah 'drrrroooooollll' movies, games, music... everything. unfortionately, my college shut it down on campus... something about it using like 50% of our bandwidth :D

oh yeah, and when i last got it, it had NO spyware of any kind. make sure you check before you install though.
