FliegendeWolf 0 #1 May 8, 2003 So I've been scouring the classifieds looking for a rig and I always end up with the same scenario. I'm 5'6" and 137 pounds. My AFF instructor recommends that I look for a 170 sq ft rig (or that vicinity). So either people are selling rigs with 170 ft canopies who have downsized and are continuing to downsize (meaning that they're way bigger than I am), or the people who are my size are selling their 135s... AggieDave 6 #2 May 8, 2003 Couldn't you just solve your problems and get a Velocity 96?(I'm joking, please don't really do that!) --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
CrazyIvan 0 #3 May 8, 2003 You might be fine with a 150, I'm 135Lb and my instructors recommended me that size.__________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you.
FliegendeWolf 0 #4 May 8, 2003 Not a bad idea, Dave. Then I wouldn't have to repay any loan I might take out for it! A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
andybr6 0 #5 May 8, 2003 Hey I know what you mean i have been looking for a rig too but having difficultys because i am tall [6'2"] and being a mere uni student i have little money to spend though i am allowing about £1800 [$2500]. What makes it more difficult is the lack of second hand rigs here in the UK. Ironically enough though i may be able to help you if you were willing to ship from the UK a guy e-mailed me this its too small for me but sounds right for you. "JUST SENDING THE DETAILS OF RIG, JAVELIN-J1 CONTAINER IN BLACK with red white blue flap. B.O.C with hackey. 120 JUMPS. MAIN-SABRE150 red blue black. 120 JUMPS. RESERVE-TEMPO150. 1 JUMP. CYPRESS- 1997,just back from service. The complete rig is in very good condition, will come with a new pack job. the rig is sized for approx,5'6-6'0 person. I'm selling for £1400, I am in RUGBY, WARWICKSHIRE" He was responding to a "wanted" as so i dont know anything about him but i can e-maiol you some contact details if you like??? ------------------------------------------------ "All men can fly, but sadly, only in one direction"
PhreeZone 20 #6 May 8, 2003 Go for the 170 instead of the 150. I know of a Sabre2 170 in a Mirage G3 thats for sale... The harness is a bit larger, but it might be worth a shot. If you stumble across a rig thats got the right canopies but wronh harness keep in mind you can normally get the harness resized for about 150 or so from the manufactor.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
Remster 30 #7 May 8, 2003 So let me get this straight… his instructor recommended a 170, but you feel a 150 would be fine for him!?! And you base this one what detailed knowledge of gear and his skills? Man, before posting a technical recommendation, take a step back and think a minute (not just you Crazy….)Remster
jmpnkramer 0 #8 May 8, 2003 Hey Steve: Is your profile correct in that it shows 12 jumps? If so I would not recommend going any lower than 170. I am 5'8 and around 150. I was not able to buy my first rig until I had about 150 jumps. It was slightly big on me but it worked. The main a Clipper Sprint 190. What was good about it is that the canopy let me make some stupid mistakes w/o breaking me or worse killing me. I learned a whole lot about flying a canopy under that monster. Just a suggestion but I would just look for a nice/decent used rig that you can learn and make little mistakes on. Do not be so eager to have something which you really enjoy. Enjoying the sport should be your primary focus at this point. You can always get a custom fit rig later in your jumping career. It is hard to find a used rig that is perfect for you so just find one that is close. Go larger before you go smaller. I am sure there are a ton of people on here that can help you find somehting. Take Care big guy. Not sure I would ever goto Michigan but if you ever travel south to Florida look for me in the sky. Laters!! Blue Skies & Soft Landings, Keith (KRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMER!!!!!!!!!!!) CrazyIvan 0 #9 May 8, 2003 Quote Man, before posting a technical recommendation, take a step back and think a minute (not just you Crazy….) It was not a recommendation, I said 'MIGHT' like in 'I'm just saying' I don't have the authority nor the knowledge to 'recommend' anything, he or anyone else MUST get such recommendations from instructors or experienced riggers. I'm sorry if I gave that impression. __________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you.
Tasadin 0 #10 May 8, 2003 I got a rig coming from the US brand new and its a 175 Triathlon with a smart reserve of the same size. Its in wings container and the main/container are black/silver and white. I just got a 150 in a J1 second hand here and whilst I'm happy to have two rigs I would be willing to help out and sell the new one. I'm still waiting on the canopies being finished. I'll take $2600 no offers and its all brand new. Wings comes with all the trimmings - stainless attachments, articulated harness, mini rings and boc with hackey. I'm 155lb's and 5'9" with a 38 inch chest (ish). If you think its a go'er pm me buddy and we can sort something out. Obviously doesnt have cypres for that price.
