Skymama (the dove) pictures

Recommended Posts

Well, the "babies" made their first jump today!

I didn't get to see it of course. I just looked up there at around noonish and they were gone:o. Just an empty nest is left. Nothing left to do but sweep up the birdshit.

*sigh* they grew up so fast. I didn't even get the other roll of film finished and they were gone. I saw Mom & Dad sitting on my fence though. No sign of the kids. Too bad, because officially, they each owe a case of beer!

I will post pics next week.

Saturday April 19:

I was fixing beakfast about 9 AM and Skymama came back, soon joined by Skypapa!! (I hadn't swept out the nest, just the shelf next to it).

Skymama spent a lot of time sitting on the nest, as if she were preparing to lay another pair of eggs (mourning doves usually have two eggs at a time). Skypapa quickly joined her, periodically flying off only to return with a new twig in his mouth for the nest. Evidently they figured that now that their kids had moved out, they could afford some renovations on the nest.

A couple of times I thought Skypapa was trying to mount Skymama, but saw me thru the curtain & flew off. Damn, sorry if I was a cock-block!

Actually though, I now believe that they already "did it" somewhere else, and only returned so that Skymama could lay her eggs. We shall see if I'm correct. I have read that mourning doves often lay more than one clutch per year.
