kevin922 0 #4 May 12, 2003 Quoteyeah and in the case of the the bridle wrap, I wouldn't mind knowing what the end result was. a sore leg i'm sure. :) on a serious note you can see the pics and "read" about it here or if your french isn't that great here: One can be a pupil endowed in parachuting and not to have a chance... Our direct-live of the month presents a spectacular and astonishing incident, which it would be quite difficult to reproduce second once! We are in Chambéry, Denis Nguyen frames third jump P.A.C. this pupil and all well does without. She is relaxed and applied, the position is good, the exercises are successful and she offers in the passing a small sign with the camera of her instructor, who is our witness here. By Bruno Passe Images Denis Nguyen At the agreed altitude of 1 500 meters, Denis comes to replace himself with the right-hand side of his pupil and the leg holds to him to assist the opening. It confirms to him by the signal, simultaneously it already began its gesture. We are with image 3 of the series presented here and until there all goes well. Image 4 : The pupil has the hand on the handle of the hand-deploy: the gesture is perfect, the position is good. The legs are folded up slightly too much upwards, but that is not quite serious... Image 5 : It starts to extract the hand-deploy. The gesture is slightly directed downwards, but that is not quite serious... Image 6 : The extractor completely left its small pocket and one distinguishes the rope which floats behind the right foot. Image 7 : All is played at this very precise moment: By a quite unhappy chance, the rope rubs on the foot and comes to form a loop there. With a margin of a few centimetres, the incident would never have occurred. Image 8 : The only tension of the rope floating in the relative wind is enough to create a twist on the rope and to maintain the loop around the foot. Nimble hands would not have done better! Image 9 : The pupil (who does not have obviously anything considering) coward the hand-deploy. The instructor realized of the situation, but it does not have time to react. It hardly occurred a second since image 7. Images 10 to 13 : The extractor put the rope of connection in tension, tying the loop on the foot and causing a blocking of the phase of deployment. But the tension is transmitted all the same along the rope which extracts the curved pin from closing of the bag. At the same time how the parachute opens, the trap is closed again on the pupil! Images 14 and 15 : The pupil is raised by the right leg. The lovage of its principal sail is now apparent, but the extractor is always blocked by the rope. It seems to look at its instructor of a perplexed air and it is included/understood! Images 16 to 18 : The traction exerted by the extractor on its right leg makes it pass on the back, which enables him to see the incident on line: the rope blocked on the leg and the bag of deployment which is trotted with the liking of the relative wind. Images 19 to 22 : The instructor cannot follow any more his pupil who is slowed down by the extractor in tension. It already started to fight while trying to release all this muddle. Image 23 : The instructor decides to open his parachute: on the one hand it is time to do it, on the other hand that will enable him to follow its pupil of the eyes. Images 24 to 26 : The pupil passes to with dimensions from his instructor who is in phase of opening. It is folded into two to try to reabsorb the incident which it A seems he well analyzed by locating the blocked rope. Images 27 and 28 : Hung to his extractor, the pupil continues to fall and the instructor looks at it being inserted until it is nothing any more but one small point on the ground. It is obviously baited to try to solve the incident. The end is hardly visible on the video: a small white spot which corresponds to the opening of the parachute of help by the Cypres release, therefore with 225 meters. One can consider that it saved the life to him because a procedure of help started below this height has little chance to succeed. The history does not finish too badly: Opened under a parachute of help, to the short-nap cloth of the ground and above an inhabited zone, the pupil manages to be a small grass corner. No the chance, it is inclined. It draws some with a distorsion from the knee. The analysis of the incident is rather simple. The sum of three elements: A small gauge (1,60 m), legs a little too bent during the phase of opening and an incredible chance caused the beginning of the incident on which the pupil does not have large-thing to reproach himself. From now on Denis Nguyen recommends to tighten the legs with the opening slightly and to avoid " the heels with the buttocks ", especially for the small gauges. The assumption of a bad conditioning of the rope hand-deploy is quickly dismissed, since in this school the parachutes pupils are folded by confirmed. The only error (but it is serious) made by this pupil however gifted is focusing on the incident: it lost the concept of time while trying to solve it. But when one has only three jumps and that one sees his emmêlage on line, it must be held things in the head of them. Perhaps that if it had remained face ground, the incident would not have been " visible " in its eyes and that it would have more thought of its procedure of help. Whatever the situation, in parachuting one never should lose the concept of time. When the ground is close, it is necessary to try to open the help even if the situation is not " ideal ". :)

kevin922 0 #8 May 12, 2003 QuoteHoly crap man, that video with the two freeflyers in red, did the cameraman even pull or what? I see him go upright and his motion becomes horizontal, but he isn't slowing down at all! Man you guys are making me work here.. re this video: Well below the normal altitude of opening, a fine layer of clouds plunges both free-flyers in a world deprived of visual reference with the ground. Two hundred meters hardly under this layer, that could be the appointment with death well. But for the moment Laurent and Alain do not think of it. A jump of skyball it is very amusing, to see captivating.... Both free-flyers have certain experience, but the first exchanges of skyball seem however a little awkward. Image 1 : Laurent has just sent the skyball towards Alain, in a jet not very precise. The ball arrives at the level of the legs of Alain who breaks his position while trying to catch it. It then leaves the "vertical tube" in a skid backwards. The ball "will float" some share between the two free-flyers. The sound altimeters resounded. Obnubilated by the skyball to catch up with, they try another chance. They will not hear the other beeps of their Pro Track. Image 2 : Laurent locates in first the position of the skyball. He advances in a movement precipitated to recover it. Both free-flyers are to approximately 1 000 meters of the ground. Image 3 : Laurent has just missed his blow. The skyball did not move, but its precipitation caused to him a significant skid due to the loss of control of its position of flight. Alain remains remote, it feels the end of the jump and lets Laurent take care of the recovery of the ball. Both free-flyers do not take conscience of exact altitude. The layer of clouds their mask any visual reference with the ground. Image 4 : The flight head in bottom of Laurent is vague because it tries several times to catch the ball by tightening the arm, which destabilizes it. Moreover, its legs "do not hang" any more the air to maintain it in verticality. They float sometimes forwards, sometimes backwards. Its body takes the relative wind in an uncontrolled way. Sudden Laurent of the crab angles whereas it should be presented vertically near the skyball. Both free-flyers are in any event to approximately 700 meters of the ground. A long ago that they should have given up the part. Image 5 : Laurent finally succeeded in catching the skyball. He finds certainly that the drop time was long. He puts himself quickly flat before drawing. Alain does not realize yet that it is now in the red. To 600 meters, it passes on the back by looking at Laurent leaving in drift. Image 6 : Always in position back above the vapour cloud, Alain throws a glance on his altimeter. Amazed, it realizes that it is with 500 meters. Image 7 : Alain, always on the back, makes a sign of the two hands to indicate the end of the jump. Useless gesture, the seconds are invaluable, it does not have there really more time to lose! Both free-flyers are below 400 meters. Behind plane, Laurent opens his principal sail. He will pass the 225 meters in final phase of opening, altitude to which its Cypres starts. Image 8 : Alain does not have Cypres, it continues to fall. At the time when it crosses the layer of clouds, Alain returns flat to open instantaneously. He will be with approximately 200 meters of the ground at the time when its extractor will be implemented. The ways on the ground are now quite visible and quite broad. Image 9 : The sail of Alain has just left the P.O.D. It will still need several tens of meters of depression before it is completely slowed down. Its speed is still too significant to survive if it were to now touch the ground. Images 10, 11 and 12 : It is now the full phase of opening. In last about fifty meters before the contact with the ground, the trees go up quickly to the eyes of Alain. Images 13 and 14 : On the level of the summit of the trees, the sail is in phase of final deployment. In precipitation, Alain can only seize the left order. He will take the elevator on the right, not time to seek his second order. Image 15 : Whereas it meets the first branches, its vertical speed is not yet completely absorbed. Moreover, its principal sail is 79 square feet... Image 16 : The sail of Alain is entirely opened, but it does not have absolutely time to choose the place of its landing. It is good for the trees! Image 17 : It is protected from the branches in which it is inserted. Image 18 : The largest branches stop finally this descent into Hell. The sail and its pilot remain hung in the tree. A chance, because the cold ground at that time would not have absorbed the shock of its fast arrival so much. The breathing of Alain is haletante, but it does not have any scratch. Today it was one day of chance... In France and in many countries, the jumps of skyball are prohibited. The reason is easy to include/understand when the gravity of the accident is imagined if a ball charged with lead slipping by towards the ground with more than 250 km/h were going to be impacted on a house, a car or a person. But this type of jumps remains trying. Certain "pirate" jumps of skyball are always organized by-Ci by-there. The heavy ball embarked in hiding-place on the aircraft then becomes a target which should definitively be caught. The jump becomes doubly exciting, initially it is not so easy to seize a skyball in fall and moreover prohibited plays are enivrants. More than enivrés, Laurent and Alain were hypnotized here by the skyball. It attracted them in a world where even the concept of their own safety had disappeared. Their still insufficient technical level in free-fly did not enable them to be a Master of the situation. Moreover, head in bottom, altitude decreases quickly, especially below 1 000 meters. The beeps of the sound altimeter follow one another quickly. With the birth of the free-fly, the pioneers quickly carried out this danger. Almost all then chose to jump with two sound altimeters. As for Alain, for this day of chance, it has jumped from now on with a Cypress. Nobody is infallible...

Luna 0 #10 May 12, 2003 Quotekicking reserve handle while in sit train = reserve out Be careful with those trains! We just had one at our DZ where the shoelace loop of the person in back managed to catch around the hackey of the person in front. Person in back noticed and went to free it, but the change in position only broke the train. Luckily, the shoelace came free as the hackey was pulled out, resulting in premature deployment, but no complications. Just something else to check for. JeffGordon 0 #20 May 13, 2003 It looks like the student was attempting a turn. It seems that, after the turn was initiated, the student dearched with legs fully extended and the right arm out. With one side of his body catching air and the student slightly on his side the spin developed quickly. Notice when the student RELAXES into an arch, the spin stops, but the student appears to be panicking and starts to flail. Bottom line: to avoid this RELAX and ARCH.
