Skydivers at work

Recommended Posts

On one of my rounds at where I work, I noticed a lady having a lot of skydiving pictures hanging in her cubicle. I asked her if she was jumping and it turned out she had been a competition jumper, but stopped jumping 8 years ago. We talked a little skydiving and now she might want to start again. :)
Have any of you discovered co-workers, friends, etc that skydives?

There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

I was sitting at my favorite local watering hole (again) and I over heard the bartender (who I'd known for awhile since it was my favorite place for a beer or 2) talking about the "mantis" positioin to another patron who I also knew. Come to discover, not only did those two guys jump but another 10 people who frequent the place were also jumpers, even one of the co-owners of the place jumped. It was a fun discovery!

Yep, I've found them working in different courthouses, taking martial arts, and even eating out at restaurants, posing as everyday assholes..... until they see you're wearing skydivng shirts or such- then they come out of hiding right quick-;)B|

Well, this place is WHUFFOS FESTIVAL, but, when they ask me about my sky high adventures, they really enjoy them.

I've showed them a few pics of some of my jumps and tunnel videos, funny thing is that they love them, but always look at me like I have 2 heads. :D

None here....although I did talk one co-worker into a tandem last Christmas at Raeford. Even though he had a great time, he won't be jumping again....(I think SkyMonkeyOne molested him somehow during the canopy ride....) :)

Where I work, I am overwelmed by pot bellied older guys, who swear up and down that I am going to die when (it is just a matter of time) my parachute fails to open. They, on the other hand, are just waiting for their heart attacks.

How do ya like it Johnny?

well, not quite at work, but...

Had my car busted into very recently. Making the police report I passed a comment about 'glad I at least took my rig out of the car' .. turns out the officer was a jumper in the olden days of rounds!!

Maybe it's something about cops and me but, also, several years ago I totaled a Triumph TR-6 (no fault of mine). The cop taking the accident report told me he'd always wanted one ... long story short he's now the President of the Triuph club I founded years before.

Strange but true. Now all i need is to find an RCMP oficer ('sherrif?) who's into BASE ....;);)

One of my clients saw a sticker on my truck and started asking about skydiving. Turned out he used to sport jump back in the days of rounds. He said he had to quit because of family and back problems. Keeps swearing that he is going to come out and watch. He is always interested in hearing stories about my jumps and is facinated by ram-air canopies:D

My work is full of wuffos as well, but they are some FINE looking wuffos. We got a couple tri-delt gals who want to try doing a tandem, and that is A - OK!
I used to always feel pretty gay being one of the two male employees at work, but no i see it as kind of an untapped resource. ;)

The nearest person I know who is a skydiver lives an hour away...People ask me at work about my stickers on my car. I tell them that I skydive and they always say "yeah I've done a tandem before" **sigh** I dont even bother to continue. Then I get asked the typical whuffo q's and I usually just tell them to come to the DZ one time and see for themselves.:)

One of my instructors at school has a skydive bumper sticker,I have tried to talk jumping with him but he always changes the subject, not sure whats up with that.Another instructors has a bunch of military jumps, all he will say about jumping is " I get paid to jump ".
I did see a "Skydiving Magazine" bumper sticker in the office parking lot next to school last week.I shot the mag an e mail asking for one and had it within 3 days.:)

I disagree with you Suz...I would re-affirm how excited they felt to do their Tandem and urge them to take it up. Relay all the things you love about it to them...and get them back out of another.

We are all stewards of the sport, but I don't believe we should be so "in to it" that we can even appreciate those who may have sampled a bite, but never ordered the whole entree. After all, many of us started that same way!

Anyway, I can relate to your feelings though...you get tired of listening to people who have done one tandem and then consider themselves skydivers. A girl I used to work with even had stickers on her car (and her boyfriends!) after only one tandem. My only thought, "Try Hards!":S

The MATRIX has me though - and I am proud of it!!!

p.s. I'm surrounded by whuffo's at work, but I have gone so far as to educate them on the lingo so I can talk freely about it and not get asked the 'boring' stuff. Now if only I could get them to come out!!!>:(

That was all that I meant.

Sure! I agree with you. But what I meant by "I don't bother to continue" is that I wish that I didn't have to explain all skydiving terms to whuffo's, ya know? I wish that I had somebody who shared my interest so that I could babble away without choosing my words carefully!

Not at work...I, too, am surrounded by whuffos. However, a few weeks ago, my BF AndyMan and I were up on our building's rooftop, grilling some steaks, and another guy was up there cooking his dinner, as well. I was wearing my SkyVenture "Where Champions Train" t-shirt, which the other guy saw and promptly asked, "Are you guys skydivers?"

We quickly got into a conversation and discovered he just moved to Chicago and signed on at our home DZ as a videographer. His girlfriend joined us a few minutes later, and she's a jumper, too!

There is also another skydiving couple in the building, but we don't know exactly where in the building they live. Three skydiving couples living downtown in the same building...small world!

Michael Bess and Kerry Strand both work for my company, but it's such a huge enterprise, they're in different geographical locations in Puget Sound and I seldom see them except at the DZ.

I just started a new part-time job in a little gift shop. With a staff totaling around six, I never expected to meet anyone that knew anything about jumping. I was hanging out listening to a woman co-worker discuss with a customer how their twenty-something children think they know everything. My co-worker said "My son jumps out of perfectly good airplanes!" As soon as the customer left I asked her about it. She was almost as excited as I was to find this common bond! I think it was nice for her, as a mother that had never seen her son jump, to hear all about it! She ended up calling her son and handing me the phone, we talked for probably 30min. It was so much fun to talk to someone that understood wingloading and other skydiving terms!
