Anyone Here Fly Heli's?

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering how hard it truely is to fly one of those bad motha's B| Right hand is engine power, left hand is for lateral movement, and left and right pedels to alter the angle of attack for the tail rotor providing left and right turn...hmmm. I think I could get the hang of it. I would probably kill myself in the process...but damn I do pretty good in the flight sims B|

Got some time in a trainer. The thing about helicopters is that they NEVER stay in a steady state. Every control input is followed up with many other inputs just to stay were you want to put it, again and again.
In a plane you can trim it for climb, cruize, approach desent and leave it there hands off. Like your canopy it will seek out the airspeed and heading you chose for it and stay there barring any atmospheric intervention.
helicopters are trying to spin themselves out of the sky. Pilots are very much like those one man band kind of guys playing the tuba a banjo a tamborine and a snare drum at the same time.
Great deal of fun though.

I do. Left hand - power; right hand - directional control by tilting the rotor disk; pedals - keep in trim during flight, turns during hovering and taxiing. But those are just the  skills. The hard part is filing a flight plan that the FAA will accept, cause those guys are nothing but fun.

Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics.

I'm an airplane pilot, not a helicopter pilot, but I went for an intro helicopter lesson last summer. At $195 an hour for dual time I can't afford to get the license (or rent the thiings for $155 an hour either), but it was a lot of fun. I've HEARD that the company I'm going to work for will pay for flight training, so I might be able to get a helicopter license out of them. But for that kind of money I just can't believe it's that simple.

Most of my lesson was at "high" altitude.... flying around at a couple thousand feet. I didn't care about that... I woulda liked to spend the entire half hour never getting more than 20 feet off the ground. :)
The best part is that the local helicopter school happens to be located at the local DZ. I hopped out of the R-22, grabbed my rig, and hopped onto a twin otter. (If you think I shoulda worn my rig in the R-22, there was DEFINITELY no room for that. Those things are tiny.)

The pilot likened flying a chopper to standing on a ball on a hill.

I'm not a helo pilot but I did get to fly the AH-64 Sim at Ft. Campbell. Much fun! I'd have to say that's a great analogy. After flying quite a few fixed wings the Helo was a WHOLE new story. Inherently unstable is a kind description. Until you get some airspeed anyway.

The sad part about it is that to the best of my knowledge, there is no realistic, accurate, PC-based helo flight sim in existence, and nobody who manufactures a FULL set of controls (id est - collective pitch, cyclic, and rudder pedals) for PC-based sims. I've seen stuff on the web about people trying to cobble up their own. If anybody knows of an accurate sim and control set, please post it here.

I remember a rescue pilot who flew Hueys at the survival school telling me that helicopters do not really fly... and all that the pilot really does is keep them in a controlled state of crash. It always made sence to me since I was going to be leaving via parachute anywayB|

Another old chestnut: "Helicopters don't actually fly. They're so ugly that the Earth repels them."

Unlike airplanes, helicopters do not want to fly, but Rod Tinney can make his Bell 412 ship do incredible things. :)
