Well, you could just buy pieces and parts a little at a time. That's what I'm doing.
MSI K7D Master-L motherboard
2-1 Gig sticks of DDR RAM (room for 2 more)
2 Athlon MP 2600+ processors.
Waiting for the rest to drop a bit more before I continue ordering.

You wanna just get everything in Parts. Think of getting a new computer like a chop shop. Take what you need from the old one if you don't want to keep it and start getting pieces from their.

Quotewoot, i didn't know there were 10000rpm ide drive out.
ya... they're "enterprise level" drives... mad fast and SCSI-esque reliability...
more expensive than regular IDE, but not as expesnive as serious SCSI.
personally i'd probably just go with 2 100gig drives mirrored for the same price as that 36gig...more reliable and who needs 10000rpm in a non-server environment? i do video capture and editing on a 7200 drive just fine.

I held out for seven years before I upgraded. Really cheap way to be impressed.

true... but i've learned to balance whiz-bang geek status schwag with practical uses... zB: 100 gig of RAID is far more practical while still having a good level of whiz-bang.
just make sure it's SATA and you'll still impress the geek chicks
