steve1 5 #36 May 15, 2003 QuoteAnd Arnold was much much larger then Steve Reeves... The sport is evolving, nutrition is much better and non-steroid supplementing is MUCH better then it was even 10 years ago. He might have or he might not have, without actually seeing the guy in person, its hard to really tell (even then its still mostly a guessing game). When Arnold was on top all the pros were on steroids. I saw Arnold once in person in Hawaii walking down the street with a tall Brunette (about 25 years ago). He didn't look at all out of place. Just a big muscular guy, not at all like his huge pictures in magazines. You have to admire the guy. Most professional body builders are kind of freaks of nature though. They have ideal genetics for body building. Most all have wide shoulders, narrow waist, ideal skeletal structure and a high number of muscle cells. One guy used to win contests without even working out. This wouldn't happen today though because it is so competitive. Some people spend a lifetime trying to build their physique to this level and never get big enough even to compete. Genetics means everything in this game. Larry Scott was able to compensate for narrow shoulders by building huge deltoids. Not everyone can build their deltoids to that size though. You do have to admire a bodybuilders discipline and determination though. Most spend years of hard training while following an extremely strict diet, particularly when approaching contest time. There's no doubt that steroids do work, also. .......Steve1
beemertec 0 #37 May 15, 2003 One of the guys I work with is a huge bodybuilding fan and amatuer body builder. He said this guy used something called synthol ( might be spelled wrong). It is soem type of oil that you inject and it stays in that area. He said if you ever see the guy close up you can really tell because of the way his muscles are shaped and the are very uneven. It's what I heard anyway. Blue Skies Steve Ok, so it's pink, but I'm secure in my manhood, and I still look cool coming in under it!
steve1 5 #38 May 15, 2003 One characteristic that you can sometimes tell if a bodybuilder is taking heavy doses of steroids is what competitors term "bitch tits". The nipple area actually starts to enlarge to take on female characteristics. I've often wondered about some professional women bodybuilders (who take steroids). Some have a deep gruff voice and even have to shave. I hope I'm not giving the impression that all bodybuilders are heavy steroid users. Many are clean and you have to admire what they have achieved being drug free. Some do take steroids though to not only to increase muscle size, but to keep their muscle mass while following an extreme diet to cut their fat level. I used to read a lot about this, but haven't bought a muscle magazine in years......Steve1

SkymonkeyONE 4 #41 May 16, 2003 Been there, done that, had the back zits that go along with cottonseed oil-based injections. Fuck ALL that and the rage that goes along with it. Just like any other discipline of strength-based athletics, bodybuilding is filled with abusers. Those who claim innocence are the ones smart and or lucky enough to carry piss clean. Worse off of all are the people who, for years, have abused HGH (human growth harmone). That is what gives female bodybuilders the "lantern jaw" look. Separate, but totally related is GHB. I am sure that the majority of people out there do not know that GHB, portrayed in all the media as "the date rape drug" was developed as an artificial substitute for HGH. The body converts GHB into HGH when injested. When used in sane doses, GHB greatly reduses the refractory period following an extremely heavy workout. It was only when people began using excessive doses that they found out that it got them "high." Even higher doses, it was found, knocked a person out, but still left them feeling great and on top of the world when they woke up. Unbelievable that something that started as such a good thing could ruin so many lives. Chuck
KawiZX900 0 #42 May 16, 2003 so Nick Nolte wasn't full of shit when he said he used the stuff GHB for working out.... Huh.... I thought he was just a freak. It sounds like your saying that one can increase his strength without increasing his size or increase his size without increasing his strength. I have not read much up on this but I do have my own personal experience and what I have seen in gyms to go by. I found that I was able to get my bench max from 230 (what it was before I ever lifted) to 315 without gaining any weight. My natural weight has always been 180. But when I kept working out and got my max to 340 my weight shot up to 200. Strangely/annoyingly enough my weight did not easily come back down when I took a break. But anyway from my experience I don't believe I could every be in the 350 bench range without weighing 200. And to me that would suggest that gaining muscle and gaining strength is mutually inclusive. If I could make a wish, I think I'd pass. Can't think of anything I need No cigarettes, no sleep, no light, no sound. Nothing to eat, no books to read.

A lot of power lifters are very massive. Many bodybuilders are former power lifters. Many bodybuilders do heavy basic lifts to build mass. I think a lot of people think that bodybuilders are all show and no strength. Not at all. Ever see the poundages that some of these guys can handle. I remember seeing Lou Ferigno (you know the guy on the incredible Hulk show) enter some fitness contests on TV. One event he beat everyone else on was the bike race. They are more than muscle bound oafs. Arnold's little lifting pardner Franco Columbo was also a power lifter who once had a worlds record in the bench press. He weighed in at about 180 pounds, but could bench over 500 lbs. He later went on to become Mr. Olympia in body building. It's too bad that steroid use has become such an important element in both body building and power lifting circles.....Steve1
Zenister 0 #49 May 16, 2003 they can be but they are not always. pardon the half assed terminology, someone in the field please correct me.. the difference for strength training is you are trying to get the most out of every single fiber. Where as with body building your increasing the number of muscle fibers, without the focus on how efficiently your muscles work. anecdotal accounts claim that Bruce was pound for pound MUCH stronger than the body builders he worked with when he became interested in weight training. having the potential strength and being able to focus it when you need to are two different things.____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
