wmw999 2,589 #1 May 18, 2003 There seems to have been some spin applied to the Jessica Lynch story . Here's a page with a whole set of stories about her; what's interesting is the number of spins (no, I haven't read them all). There is the "Lynch as hero who shot her way out" along with "Lynch as a woman was spared the execution-style murders of her male companions" along with "no bullet wounds" along with "maybe tortured" along with "injuries consistent with vehicle accident." She doesn't remember anything about the whole affair supposedly. It's sad that I don't know if I can believe what people are saying about her. And what's saddest is that this is taking a 19-year-old girl who did something brave, and was doing her job, and turning her into an icon, by manipulating facts (not making them up, just manipulating). story here Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
kiltboy 0 #2 May 18, 2003 I've read a few stories about that as well. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/correspondent/3028585.stm and http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,3604,956127,00.html David
CDRINF 1 #3 May 18, 2003 One detail that has not been publicized much - I was at a briefing given by a very high ranking Army officer (multiple stars) who had talked to the soldiers who were captured. The one .50 caliber machine gun they had in the convoy, which might have got them out of the fix, jammed after firing one round. Not too heroic to say you got captured because your key weapon was poorly maintained and didn't work. CDR
