dropdeded 0 #1 May 22, 2003 Anyone know anything about student loans in California.Im not talking about the actual loan to attend school but any kind of financial aid for the other crap that I cant afford to pay for while Im goin to school.Im seeing these kids at school talking about this check and that check that they get from the school.(and their still bummin smokes) I AM going to the financial Aid office in the morning but there is such a wealth of information here so what the hell. I was denied unemployment because I quit my full time job, (to attend school). My wife is fully disabled. I am seeking employment,Im not looking for any kind of free ride but damnit,I know there is a TON of money out there for people who need it(and a lot that dont).I know its there because I have been helping to supply the demand my whole life by working.(had to vent a little) So anyways, any, ideas on what agencies to contact ? dropdeded------------------------------------------ The Dude Abides. -
jessd 0 #2 May 22, 2003 The financial aid office is a good place to start. They can help you fill out the necessary forms and answer any questions that you may have. Fill out what is called the FAFSA form. This is used for applying for all kinds of federal aid whether it's grants or loans. Sometimes the government awards you more money in aid than school costs - that's when people will receive a check from the college. It is a lengthy form (and a pain to fill out) but it is worth it. jeremyneas 0 #3 May 22, 2003 When you go to the financial aid office, they will give you a FASFA form. Make sure you have last years income tax information (what you just did), and you should be able to do it right there. In about a week it will tell you what Grants you have been awarded and how much in student loans you can have. It is VERY easy even though the forms look intimidating. Next, check out what scholarships are available at your school and start applying. Keep your GPA up and the scholarships roll in. I do all this plus i receive the GI Bill every month and I get paid more than i did while i was serving. Jeremy
beavdog 0 #4 May 22, 2003 You need to contact the school you wish to attend and fill out a FAFSA. They will determine the amount of aid that you will recieve automatically. The way is sounds, you should come out of it really well. You can get Pell Grants, which you dont have to repay, and loans. Good luck. If you have ?'s PM me. jessd 0 #6 May 22, 2003 Check the local library. They often have resources for the different scholarships that are available. You be eligible for one based on the fact that your wife is disabled. Again, check with the financial aid office - they will be able to help a lot. "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away..." KawiZX900 0 #9 May 22, 2003 the financial aid office at my school would not talk to me until i signed all the paper work commiting to the school, then they were my best friends... Sally Mae is who I got my loan from , low rates.... pell grant and Cal grant are somthin to look at.. and then the federal stafford loan.. Accelerate hard to get them looking, then slam on the fronts and rollright beside the car, hanging the back wheel at eye level for a few seconds. Zenister 0 #11 May 22, 2003 Quote Yeah - that guy. I wish he could hook me up. I would love to not owe nearly 40K right now for my school loans. well you could join the army like i did..thats i little under the amount they paid off..i only had to pay taxes on the pay off as income. unfortuantly they paid it all in one year instead of installments like they were supposed to..so it seemed to the IRS like i made ALOT more in 1999 than i really did...i sat down and figured it out with my tax guy once..if LRP had done it like they were supposed to i would have paid about $300 more in taxes..since they did it all at once i paid almost $4,000 ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
