American Idol (am I alone)

So what happened to that annoying Simon dude ?

He'll go back to his record company and promote real singers!

ALternatively, He's a possible candidate for a whole new reality TV show... "Celebrity Survivor Get Me Out Of Here Race". This is where we take a whole bunch of "suitable" celebrities, give them hand-held cameras, drop them just south of Foz Do Cunene (just south of the big minefield), and the first celebrity to get to Swakopmund is the winner .

Nominations please!?

Mike.

I think American Idol is for the majority of the American public that have no lives.... sit in front of the TV and watch other people live life for them.

Couch potato culture.

Actually, I think the performers on Nashville Star were way more talented

Totally agree...it was great to listen to people who could not only sing, but write their own songs. That is real talent.

One of Clay's final songs was an "original," but I think that meant that it was unreleased, not necessarily written by him.

Bullshit. Obviously it is not for you, but the show was something families could sit down together and enjoy. I know a lot of adults who enjoyed the show alongside their kids of all ages. It was an alternative to a lot of the other trash on TV that is dubbed as "entertainment".

Are the Olympics also for people who have no lives and have to watch other people live their life for them? How about sporting events?

Excellent response!

Stupid TV shit or not, Clay has tremendous talent and could have a very good future on Broadway. Yeah, he seems like a candy-ass and of course he isn't going to make it in the MTV studio packaged Limp Biscuit bullshit world so the sooner he shed's the pop-star limelight, the better off he'll be.

I don't agree. Both are competitions between people who have a particular talent.

Or a particular lack of talent. That isn't just a slam against American Idol, although my feelings on it have been previously expressed. It applies to the Olympics too. Some of them are really horrible at what they do. However, instead of an annoying Brit making fun of them on TV, they just don't make the sports highlights tapes.

OMG its back...

American Idol is Laurence Welk for the MTV generation...not my bag at all but if you like it more power to you..personally the only reason i bought a TV at all was so we wouldnt have to keep watching skydiving vids on my roomates 10 inch/vcr combo thing...

That's kind of harsh, but you could say the same thing about almost everything on television. Good for you if you never watch TV, but most of us do, to one extent or another. I guess I'm just another loser with no life......:S

Justin, I agree.

Judging certain talents are subjective. Music, art, writing, acting, etc are all a matter of taste. I personally can't stand to hear Bob Dylan sing. I rather listen to a jackhammer. But, there are many who consider him one of the greatest musical icons of all time.

Now in the case of most sporting events, the victor is usually indisputable such as golf, baseball, football, etc.

like or dislike is a matter of taste. quality (in all of those disciplines) can be measured.

bob dylan is a GREAT song writer, but a mediocre musician and a terrible singer

Agreed on that point. The guy does have singing skills and has that sort of broadway "animation". Still, the purpose of that show was to get someone a record contract and make him or her an "idol." I don't think that either of those finalists qualify as an "idol." Just my opinion.

Chuck,

I think that's because people associate the word "idol" with having good looks or the "whole package". I personally was glad the competition was based on musical talent and not how well someone will look on MTV. Let's be honest, Brittany Spears is incredible to look at, but there is no way she would be able to outsing any of the American Idol finalists.

When I am listening to a CD in my car, I want someone who can sing. Whether they have nice breasts does not matter at that time.

Not that I disagree about basing the competition on talent and not superficial looks, but Ruben is overweight to an extremely unhealthy degree. He has a hard time getting through an entire song! A concert for him right now would be out of the question.

So, on that level, I'd have to say, he isn't "idol" material, but yes, I like his voice and the fact that he seems like a genuine down to earth nice guy.

This posting is FANTASTIC. First we have the Sinfield show...noone admits they watch it (like the Melrose Place episode)...we may have to break out the lie detector tests at the DZ's.

Second people admit it but say it sucks because the contestents don't write their own songs. I personally haven't seen a band start out that sung all their own stuff. They have to cover for a while and slllllooowwwly mix in their own stuff, or risk pushing the crowd out the door. And writing 2 songs a week for a couple months would be impossible at best, or just make crappy music (i.e. people tuning out). The fact that the songs are shortened is enough for me...which brings me tooo..

YES I WATCH, EVERY DAMN WEEK!!!

GOOOOO RUBEN!!!! (though i wanted to see Clay win, we have a large fat singer in the mix, i'd like to see skinny/ugly make it big)

Now if you want a real discussion, you should talk about how anyone can vote as many times as they want...now that makes it unfair on so many levels. So the people that liked Ruban can use a phone better? That is why he is the american idol? What kinda BULLSHIT is that?!?
