FliegendeWolf 0 #1 May 23, 2003 OK, one of my guilty pleasures - I absolutely love Richard Wagner's operas. I just got finished listening to a compilation of orchestral music from The Ring and can't get enough (sure, the CDs of the complete operas would be better, but that's probably overload). Anyone else here a fan?A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

Zenister 0 #5 May 23, 2003 i try not to get to hung up with the personalities of artists/musicians.. judge the work for its own merits not the merits of its creator.. I love Wagner, but its definitely a mood thing..____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
TheAnvil 0 #6 May 23, 2003 Der Meistersinger......Der Ring des Nibelungen....Der Fliegende Hollander.... Mein Gott! Wagner gefallt mir ganz gut. Seit ein Jahre habe ich ein Opera nicht gesehen, aber letzte Woche horte ich noch ein bisschen von Gotterdammerung. For y'all's that don't Deutsch sprechen. I like Wagner but haven't seen an opera in over a year. I listed to a bit from Gotterdammerung last week, but that's about it. Wagner is one of my favorite composers. FliegendeWolf 0 #7 May 23, 2003 Ask the people who voted for option 2. I voted option 1. In all seriousness, Wagner was a complete megalomaniac. Even if the charges of antisemitism were false (which I do not believe they were-but at the same time this was 19th Century Germany...antisemitism was not exactly rare), all records indicate that Wagner was an absolute nightmare to work with because he was stubborn and was never willing to compromise his ideals no matter how impractical or impossible (hence the cheesy dragon special effects in Siegfried). If it hadn't been for the insane King Ludwig who was enamored with him and thus showered wealth and political leverage on him, Wagner would have been unable to do anything that he ended up doing. If nothing else, he was certainly charismatic. A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All

I wrote a paper on the evolution of racism, and for research I read all these obscure German texts, some of which had forewords by R.W. himself. I'm now convinced he was a racist fuckhead. A musically gifted fuckhead, granted, but a fuckhead nonetheless. I apologise for the swearing, but I hate those who are intolerant of others (the Dutch are typical of this - thank you Goldmember!).
