Anxiety

Recommended Posts

The only ones I know of are exercise, and a combination of therapy/medication (depending on specifics).

Exercise can give you a sense of control in your life, which gives you more tools to fight anxiety on your own. It's not enough for everyone, though.

Being told by others that it's stupid is not helpful.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

Go running. Put on your favourite music and head to a secluded sport where you can just sweat and listen to the tunes without anyone watching. This works for me every time.

Am I the only one that thinks skydiving is the most relaxing activity? After, hell even during a jump, it's soooo relaxing. None of my whuffo aquantances understand that...not that I expect them to. Jumping out of planes just seems like the thing to do, it doesn't seem strange, or scary, or make me nervous. It's a necessity. Sometimes I forget that a year ago, I had nearly the same mindset as the average whuffo.

I make closing loops sometimes when my anxiety level is a little high. I ususally end up with around a hundred of them or so, then I measured them all and sorted them by size. It keeps me distracted from what's really causing the anxiety.

I was on Effexor for about 6 weeks after we were told my dad had cancer. I can't drink when I'm that overwelmed because it will just make me throw up. It works, but you have to take it every day. It has some icky side effects also. I won't take it again unless my choices are that or the nut house. I would go to the tanning bed, because the heat helped me to relax.

Hot bath or hot tub will help relax.

good luck!
Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

If you are having a lot of anxiety - go see a psychiatrist and psycologist combo. Good drugs for anxiety are Celexa, Effexor and your old stand-bys like Xanex and Valium (in small doses). You don't want to be so over medicated that you cannot be reactive to life. Good luck.

Gerb,

This is a very complex question that is almost impossible to answer here. Millions of people worldwide suffer from various forms of anxiety and for various reasons. Keep in mind that a certain level of anxiety is healthy as it is driven by our adrenal glands. Anxiety becomes a problem when it interferes with your quality of life. There's acute anxiety...meaning short term due to a specific event. Then there's chronic anxiety...generally a chemical inbalance in the brain.

There are numerous ways to combat anxiety both naturally and chemically. Common natural ways are exercise, prayer, hypnosis, certain herbs, yoga, biofeedback, deep breathing, etc. The chemical ways are through medication which obviously you would need a prescription. Important to note that there are many anti anxiety meds on the market that are not addictive.

The bottom line is anxiety is easily treatable and nothing to be ashamed of.

Good luck. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Chris

When I first started giving briefings, I got really anxious right before the brief. Then I started noticing that if I went climbing even 3 or 4 days before I was alot calmer...also, if I watched Fight Club the night before I was always more relaxed...maybe it was that just don't give a f#$k attitude. Anyway, just rambling cause I'm drunk....good luck.

My friend, I feel your pain. Hang in there.

I could write a book on this one topic alone.
I have in this area, 29 years experience. Whatever cure there is, I have tried. The world hasnt come to an end yet. And whatever it was/is hasnt killed me yet. So those are 2 good things.

Without getting into my personal 29 year resume crap, you might try to find out if what makes you this way is real or imagined. Find out the stimulus, if you will, and see if you can try to solve it. Mostly, it isnt easy.

Everyone loves you. And you are always awesome, no matter what you feel like. ;) Always look for help, it might be right there in front of you. Here is another time whereby there again- are no stupid questions.

Even though I do not know you-
I love you and respect the idea that you would post this. If not for you - for someone else.

:)
;)

In case anyone wants to know- there are online support groups and knowledge about depression, anxiety and other related ups and downs, helps.
