RevJim 0 #11 June 1, 2003 Quote3. Do you drink because you are shy with other people? Well, it relaxes me around new people. Quote17. Have you ever had a memory loss from drinking? Once, yep. But everyone tells me my bachelor party was incredible! Quote20. Have you ever been to a hospital or institution (like jail) on account of something you did drunk? I got picked up for underage consumption 14 years ago. Jail happens. QuoteIf you answered "Yes" to any three of these questions, YOU ARE DEFINITELY AN ALCOHOLIC... Wow, for a guy that's the designated driver 90% of the time, and actually drinks only a couple of times a year (Not including WFFC), it's a shock to see myself labeled as an alcoholic. freeflir29 0 #13 June 1, 2003 On a more serious note......I do have a friend that is a pretty serious alcoholic. The boy drinks beer for breakfast. He often does some pretty stupid things while drunk. His entire life seems to be lived with a beer in his hand. Well...he does take a couple days off now and again but when he drinks it's like there is just no control. It makes me worry....I'm wondering if getting him into skydiving would help. He has been saying he wants to do a tandem. Of course last Wednesday when I supposed to take him out for one he calls and says "I drank a lot last night and just don't feel like it." Later he showed up over here to get his truck still quite lit at 1130 AM. First thing he says is "Got any beer?" I was happy that I DIDN'T buy any at the store the night before. Not exactly sure what I can or should do for him. From what I know he has already been to rehab once. He would just rather sit around, drink, and wallow in self pitty it seems. I guess the big difference between he and I is that drinking for me just makes a good time more fun. (Not including skydiving of course) For him....it's a hobby in and of itself. dropdeded 0 #15 June 1, 2003 I'm wondering if getting him into skydiving would help. __________________________________________________ Well,I did my first Tandem when I was still drinking.I thought about it soon after I got sober and went out and did a second Tandem. Yes, skydiving "could" help this guy.I know that going through aff was a HUGE part of my early sobriety. How the hell could I ever continue to drink if I expected to learn how to deal with the reality of skydiving. This is just me,I AM an alcoholic that just cant function in the Skydiving world with alcohol in my system. For those that can, more power to you,Im just not one of you Skydiving has changed my life. dropdeded------------------------------------------ The Dude Abides. -
SpeedRacer 1 #16 June 1, 2003 16. Do you ever drink alone? hmmm, OK this would make nearly anyone except teetotallers a "maybe". I don't think its very uncommon to have a beer or a glass of wine in the evening while watching the telly. That would be "drinking alone." Clownburner 0 #23 June 1, 2003 Nothing personal, because I don't know you well enough, but most of the people I know who say they aren't psychotic, are the most psychotic people I know. I think, according to that list, that virtually anyone who skydives is probably an alcoholic. But I'm not - I'm a drunk. sobertoday 0 #25 June 1, 2003 I think the question about drinking alone is really - Do you ever get DRUNK alone? I agree that 3 "yes" answers is sort of pushing it to say someone is an alcoholic. But I just posted the test as Johns Hopkins Hospital has it on their questionaire. My sponsors rule of thumb about the 20 questions is that - if you answer "yes" to any 2 questions - you may be an alcoholic. Any 4 questions with a "yes" and you have alcoholic tendencies. And any 6 questions with a "yes" and you are an alcoholic, whether you like it or not. For what its worth - I answered "yes" to 17 out of 20 when I first got sober. As I analyzed my history of alcohol abuse, I realized after a little sobriety that I actually answered "yes" to 18 out of 20, if I wanted to be honest with myself. I don't like being an alcoholic, but I have to be honest with myself that I am. I don't like having a glass of wine with dinner or a beer after work. I like to get drunk, everytime I drink. If forced, I could have 2 or 3 drinks only, but I am miserable when I do that. One thing I heard at an AA meeting once sums me up - When I controlled my drinking, I didn't enjoy it. When I enjoyed my drinking, I didn't control it... If that is anyone out there too, then try out some of the help that is out there. It is pretty cool and the people are really helpful. Cheers, B
