Rhonda66 0 #26 June 5, 2003 I know, it's just hard to believe. You would just think that pro players would be reeaalllyyyy careful with such things. Is it normal protocol to use a corked bat to show off for the fans? Is there a such thing as a "demonstration bat"?Rhonda PP ASEL
SkyDekker 1,465 #27 June 5, 2003 QuoteThe officials had already confiscated all of his bats, so he had no reason to lie. There were a couple of innings between Sosa getting tossed for using a corked bat and the MLB Security officials picking up the rest of his bats. It would ahve been very easy to get rid of all the other ones in that time frame. I am not saying that that is the case. In my mind his accomplishments will always be tainted, even if this was the first and only time he used a corked bat in competition.
pyke 0 #28 June 5, 2003 what was he thinking...?? He was thinking, "dat damn Bonds fellow keeps beating me....yeah, well I'll show him!!" To answer the question of why would he have a corked bat for practice?? As many of you might know - when they have batting practice, fans are usually in their seats. So, if he puts a couple more balls the stands - then more fans have souveniers. do I really think it would matter with his power - NO. The man averages a 410+ft home run swing. One percent (the avg EXTRA that cork gives you) of that is 4.1 ft...still well over the wall of all MLB parks...so even if he hit a "corked" HR at 440ft - he is still only hitting a "real" 435+ft HR. This is all a big farse and I think it's silly. If it's not the Belmont 6 taking the top headlines...it's either Cork, or Ducks coming back, or Agassi going out. Man, it's silly what we let ourselves get occupied with when there is so much else to WORRY about!!! Kahurangi e Mahearangi, Kiwi, RB #926, AFF-I, FAA Snr. I mean I really doubt if anyone is pacing the floor over this (with the exception of maybe Sosa). It was just one of those things that make you wonder. Kind of like wondering why people thinking flying is dangerous but driving 80 mph on a 6 lane highway in rush hour is safe. Just one of those things that make you go “Hmmmm” PMS #62 Zarza R[red

MochaSkyChick 0 #31 June 5, 2003 QuoteWho is this Sosa guy and what was he hitting with a corked bat? Seems he may be part of the stadium janitorial staff and he was chasin' varmints off the field. He used a corked bat cause it was more humane than those solid wood ones. PMS #62 Zarza R[red
