No banks around me offer secured credit cards anymore. I dont know why, they just dont. Here is my plan. Enroll in community college. Apply for a student card. Cancel the classes and get my money back. Commence with building credit. I am leary of online cards who claim to be so easy to get. Any Ideas? Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Raefordite 0 #3 June 5, 2003 Start with those that never fail to over extend your credit. Get a Sears card, get a JC Penney card and go buy something with it. Pay it off at the store the next week before you even get a statement. Same, same with a gas station BP, Shell, etc card. Then in a month or so, try again! johnny1488 1 #10 June 5, 2003 Capital one turned me down too. Thats what my girlfriend has. I am gonna have her call them and see if they would let her cosign. They started her at a $300 limit when she was a student and now she is up to $3k. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" skybytch 273 #13 June 5, 2003 Providian offers secured cards. They were the first ones to take a chance on me ten years after I quit paying on the ones I ran up learning to skydive. If you have a checking account, a savings account (even if it only has a couple hundred bucks in it) and a record of paying your utility bills on time you should be able to get a card from Providian without a problem - maybe even without a security deposit. darkvapor 0 #14 June 5, 2003 Applying for many lines of credit at the same time hurts your credit report. I would try minimize the 'hits' (requests) on your credit report.
Michele 1 #15 June 5, 2003 What kind of loan are you looking for that requires a major credit card to verify with? Something is not right here... And yes, each time someone runs a credit check, 3 points are deducted, thus lowering your score and making you less desireable...it's not necessarily a good thing to do. However, those "inquiry" points will come back after about 3 months, IIRC. And just fyi, employers and rentals will also check credit at times, too. You should be aware that you can receive a copy of your credit report if denied credit if you ask, so you can see why. And you are allowed one free credit report annually, and should check it out then, as well. I tend to get mine when I get my taxes together, so that it's all done at one time. I borrowed $400, and it was enough to do the trick. It's cheaper than signing up for college and then quitting, because you don't get all your money back. The first credit you get will be expensive. Just minimize the cost (i.e. pay off the credit card each month, or pay more than the minimum if you get a bank loan). If you get a bank loan, you can explain to the loan officer exactly why you want to do that. It only works if you bank there and have a good rating with them, though. Michele 1 #21 June 5, 2003 Quote You only lose 3 points ? For inquiries, yes. Quote I just bought a new car and paid cash for it and the fucking dealer ran my credit anyway If you are paying cash, there is no reason to check credit. You likely can dispute it, but know what? Unless you need the 15 points in the next 90 days, there's no real reason for it. However...as it seems there's a high number of points, I would suggest getting a copy of the report and verifying who has been looking at it, and why you dropped 15 points. It may simply be because you are carrying a credit debt which is disproportunate to the charts. And if you needed a loan, with a credit score over 800, you can easily write your own ticket. I shouldn't be very concerned unless there's an anomoly of some kind. QuoteIs it different in California on point deductions or is someone hosing my score ? Nope, it is a federal clearing house (TRW, Equifax, and brain fade on the third). These credit agencies are national, and not state run. For instance, if you came to CA, your credit score would follow. Therefor, it is not bound by state laws, regs and so on. Hope it helps! jtval 0 #24 June 5, 2003 johnny! get a gas card. or any card.....HINT if you have too many inqueries into your credit history they may deny you too! the secret is, once you get a credit card go buy some small items and pay them off as the payments come in I.E. go buy some t shirts or jeans and FINANCE them! they want to see you are capable of paying over a peroid of time! if you pay em off right away you wont show any credit. if all else fails go get a signature loan for 500 or 1,000 and pay it off! DONT MISS ANY PAYMENTS... and dont tell the bank that you just want a loan for the sake of having a loan! tell them you are looking into fixing your car or buying a kidney! make something up! but you will need collateral! so offer your other kidney as payment! if I were you I would take the first credit app that come in the mail and apply for it. your APR will be on outstanding 24.9% but once you have a card you can start choosing your company! I have a card now that is only 5.5% apr! it took a while to get it that low but if you stay in good credit you will be fine!My photos My Videos
skydiverbrian 0 #25 June 5, 2003 QuoteThey started her at a $300 limit when she was a student and now she is up to $3k. Exactly why you DO NOT NEED CREDIT CARDS! The good thing about not being able to get credit is that it forces you to learn to live with cash. After a few months, they'll be beating your doors down offering you credit, but you'll already be leaps and bounds ahead of them by knowing YOU DON'T NEED THEM! In a world full of people, only some want to fly... isn't that crazy! --Seal
