Man Jailed for Airport Explosion Thu Jun 5, 9:28 AM ET - Reuters AMMAN (Reuters) - A Japanese journalist was jailed Sunday for 18 months for blowing up a Jordanian airport security guard as he tried to show that a souvenir cluster bomblet from the Iraq (news - web sites) war was harmless. The state security court sentenced Hiroke Gomi, 36, a photographer for Japan's Mainichi daily, to a reduced 18 months sentence after dropping charges of possession of explosives -- an offence punishable by up to 15 years. Gomi was convicted on a lesser count of causing unintentional death and inflicting bodily harm in the blast at Amman's international airport on May 1 that killed Sergeant Ali Sarhan and wounded four others. Chief judge Colonel Fawaz al-Baqour said Gomi had behaved recklessly in seeking to prove to the security guards that the bomblet was safe before handing it over. "Instead of acting in a proper way to hand the bomb immediately to security without tampering with it, he began to toy with it to persuade them it was disused without taking the least precautions," he said. "Although the court realizes he possessed explosives, it was clear he was not aware he was carrying any live explosives," he said. Gomi, who has covered Iraq for over a decade for his large circulation daily, found the cluster bomblet near a road in Iraq not knowing it was still active. It was detected in his luggage by an X-ray machine as he prepared to board a flight en route to Tokyo. A charge of premeditated murder was dropped after the president of Gomi's newspaper met King Abdullah to personally apologize. Sarhan's family also limited their claims to financial compensation."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."

FallRate 0 #3 June 6, 2003 This reminds me of the story about a kid who brought hand grenade to school for show and tell, believing it to be either a prop or a dud. It belonged to his grandfather. It went off. FallRate
txblondie 0 #4 June 6, 2003 I would have to agree with you on that. If stupidity was fatal, there would be a lot less trouble in the world, and I would be a lot happier. Stupid people are my pet peeve, and I deal with them at work every day. Imagine the stress level! ***************************************** Blondes do have more fun! dkpbxman 0 #5 June 6, 2003 There used to be this moron I had to deal with in work who had a habit of going back to his childhood home and robbing his parents. One time, he threatened his mother with a large explosive. After scaring her, he rubbed the lit fuse on the wall to put it out. Unfortunately for him it was the kind with the heavy-duty fuse that burns underwater. Unknown to him, the fuse kept going. The asshole lost three fingers.
