Casch 0 #1 June 5, 2003 Ok, I'm doin' an oil change. I need to know what the oil capacity is for a 1984 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L H.O. Any takers? I need some help please
jtval 0 #2 June 5, 2003 well what atmosphere ar eyou in? talk to your salesperson! LOL you want a thicker viscosity for hotter weatherMy photos My Videos
beavdog 0 #3 June 5, 2003 Add 4 qts and start the motor. Let it run briefly then recheck. Continue to fill until it reads full on the dip stick. I would guess the capacity is 4.5-5qts in a 5.0L V-8. It can also be found in the owners manual. Here's to the Breezes that blows through the Trezzez.....
Casch 0 #4 June 5, 2003 Nah, I need Capacity not Viscosity
Casch 0 #5 June 5, 2003 Yeah the thing about that is, there was a HALF QUART in the engine when I drained it...but the dip stick read NORMAL....god damnit.
jtval 0 #6 June 5, 2003 QuoteNah, I need Capacity not Viscosity oh! duh I totally mis read that! yea do the 4 qt thing etc! for an 84? you may need to keep adding oil! LOLMy photos My Videos
freakshow 0 #7 June 5, 2003 the funny thing is you consulted dz.com to find out instead of the owners manual....can't say I wouldn't of done the same thing but still kinda funny B.L. (the brain)
Casch 0 #8 June 5, 2003 Yeah...um...no owners manual
Casch 0 #9 June 5, 2003 Just got off the phone with Auto Zone and they said it should be just short of 5 quarts
oldnewbie 0 #10 June 5, 2003 I think its 5 quarts. Is this the oil pan with two oil drain plugs in it??? One in the front of the pan, and one in the back??? If it is, many people only pull one drain bolt out, and leave lots of oil still in the pan. Then they fill with 5 quarts, and its way too full!! My books are at work, so I can't get the exact figure. but i am pretty sure that is it!!
johnny1488 1 #11 June 5, 2003 I change a lot of oil. Start with 4 and go form there. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

I've been searching, but I'm coming up short. Start with 6 quarts and be ready for 8 or 9.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! johnny1488 1 #13 June 5, 2003 Friend of a friend. Worked at a dealer. New kid was changing the oil on a car and asked one of the techs if this was enough. The kid proceeded to open the oil fill on the valve cover and the engine was FULL of oil. The entire engine. He was fired on the spot. I know of engines that size that take under 5 quarts, but some cadillacs take 9 or 10. On that mustang I'm almost sure it is 5 though. Broncos with 5 litres take 6 and a lot of ford vans take 7. edit to add: My 1.8 takes 4.2 also but you cant go by that. I dont know of any car produced in the last 40 years (save the vw bug) that takes under 4 quarts of oil. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" You have NO Fuggin' idea how much grief and $$$$ you just saved me! I only drained the front end of the pan and got barely a quart out of it. I was like CRIMINY! I've been driving around with a quart and a half of oil in my engine! And I poured in 4 quarts and thought I was done. If you hadn't posted about there being two drain plugs...I could have blown the engine or some shit... If we ever meet, I owe you a case! johnny1488 1 #15 June 5, 2003 A lot of fords are like that. Wow dude sorry about that. Usually people forget the front one not the other way around. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome

oldnewbie 0 #17 June 5, 2003 Would you like to guess how I know the answer to that question!!!!! Same car, 15 or more years ago, same problem (except i left the front plug in, since real cars only have ONE plug in them). Heck,i finally had to raise the whole car up before I actually looked at the oil pan and saw that. GEEZZZ, and people wonder why i prefer to work on corvettes!! And watch out what you offer on the beer, i might take you up on it, if you happen to be at Eloy at Xmas time!!! I'm glad I could help
 Casch 0 #18 June 5, 2003 If you're gonna be at Eloy for the Christmas Boogie, you'll get your case. Well, you'll get the money anyway since I'll only be 19. I don't mind spending the cash on a case for ya when I could have spent a lot more money. I had like, 8 quarts in the engine when it only needs 5....yikes. What's yer brand and it'll be there for ya
 Islandcool 0 #19 June 5, 2003 Dude take it to oil max with the coupon and let them do it for $20. The contacts on the distributer cap were sooo corroded, along with the spark plugs that have been in there for 50K miles. Nice new slippery slimy oil, new pcv valve...or is it pvc? Will put a new belt, fuel filter and distributer cap on tomorrow ...gotta adjust the timing too...it keeps having fits where it feels like it's missing, although that could be the shitty gas and filter too. We'll soon find out
 DYEVOUT 0 #25 June 5, 2003 Quotenew pcv valve...or is it pvc PCV = positive crankcase ventilation.
