andy2 0 #1 June 17, 2003 Im a poor skydiver, as most of us are I gather. What did you do at the student stage of your progression? Did you rack up a 2 grand balance on 20% credit cards!? I don't know if thats an option I can sanely take, but having to use the DZs gear is killllling me!!! Rebecca 0 #2 June 17, 2003 QuoteDid you rack up a 2 grand balance on 20% credit cards!? Yep. It was worth it though!!!! you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?
Viking 0 #3 June 17, 2003 it took me almost a year to get my A b/c of lack of funds. If you can stand it just skip two weekends and jump the other two of the month. and find other things that you can save cash on.I swear you must have footprints on the back of your helmet - chicagoskydiver My God has a bigger dick than your god -George Carlin
skymama 37 #4 June 17, 2003 Definitely slow down on your skydiving for a month for your gear. Being in debt sucks. When you're jonesin' at home because you're not at the dz, just think about your soon to be gear and it'll be all good. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
katiebear21 0 #5 June 17, 2003 You gotta know what your wallet can handle! I charged all my personal stuff for a few months so I could pay cash for mine but I knew I could bounce back quickly! If you know carrying the debt will bother you - take your time like Viking did. It's painful but worth it in the end. If you don't care about carrying debt go for it! Push 0 #6 June 17, 2003 I kept working during school, saved money during the off season, and bought cheap used gear from dz.com without trying it first. EDITED TO ADD: the gear was cheap but definitely not crappy. In fact, it was in perfect condition. A nice Triathlon in a Javelin and a reserve with no jumps on it. -- Toggle Whippin' Yahoo Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.
hookitt 1 #7 June 17, 2003 Suck it up man, take some time off and save some dough. Make a jump within 30 days to stay (officially) current. Keep current on ground training. Get a good rig and you'll be set. That Credit card will F*** you up if you don't have the cash to pay it off.My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... wmw999 2,584 #8 June 17, 2003 I just didn't jump much in college. That was before college students got credit cards. That said, you'll probably have plenty of debt when you get out. Don't add to it needlessly; don't get the gear of your dreams unless you have extremely modest dreams. Then you can have other dreams. Make just keeping current your dream, as opposed to getting that totally cool javelin/mirage/stiletto/sabre2/PD reserve/whatever. Really. sunman 0 #10 June 17, 2003 Get all the credit cards you can and max them all out. By all the gear you want, buy booze for all your friends, then declare bankruptcy. Just don't plan on every having a loan after that.

skydive84 0 #12 June 17, 2003 I find if you dont eat u tend to save loadsa money. But youve gotta then think of looking for a smaller canopy cos by the time you get it ull be loading it same as the a larger one, due to dramatic weight loss. Also pack as much as you can. Do you really need both of ur lungs? Im sure someone would pay ya pretty good for one! If your really desperate i reckon it may be possible to get a free ride on the outside of the plane , rather than paying for the 1st class seats. Or hows about getting a loan? Then moving countries + changing your name (actually if you do that id take out more than one loan). Adi

kansasskydiver 0 #14 June 17, 2003 my gf is jumping now. i got her involved in it and paid for her FJC. now i know everywhere else is much much more expensive as our dz, we charge $25 per semester for gear rental so you could make 100 jumps and still only be $25. but the jumps are still 2 slots. she has been paying her way by packing. she packed about 12 students rigs durring of of the classes and that bought her 3 jumps. that is always an option. take a packing course, get to know a packer or rigger and start packing'<--- See look, pink dolphins DO exist! Gawain 0 #15 June 17, 2003 what would you do if you were me? If only this were and open ended question... ...hmmm... Hind sight is 20/20...I did the credit card thing and paid it down over time. Given the option again, I'd wait a month, and buy it outright. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! mjosparky 4 #16 June 17, 2003 When I was a student I was working a FireFighter and making pretty good money. But then my first rig cost me $125.00 used. Times change. SparkyMy idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
skydive84 0 #17 June 17, 2003 BASE rigs are cheaper + jumps are free! Just a thought
BlueEyedMonster 0 #18 June 17, 2003 Funny that, I had actually begun a savings account before I began jumping. I had 3 grand in there and I was going to invest it. ...THen came skydiving, and of course you know how I paid for AFF and my first rig. I learned the credit card lesson a while back. I only spend what I have in cash now. I guess I will be doing Tandems or Videos or something when I am 90. I will be too poor to retire
mouth 0 #19 June 17, 2003 Realize charging it means you will actually pay mor for the gear in the long run. Be smart and jump every other weekend then save that same amount without jumping the next weekend until you can afford gear. Don't touch that money for ANY reason short of death and you'll have cool stuff in no time. -- Hot Mama At least you know where you stand even if it is in a pile of shit. nubain1 0 #20 June 17, 2003 I pulled money out of my retirement fund to pay for AFF and gear.
