jfields 0 #85 June 18, 2003 QuoteIn my industry appearances are everything. A lot of truth in that for many occupations. While I'm an IT geek, I work at a conservative law firm. Our clients want to be comfortable knowing we are handling everything professionally and confidentially. It could be a deal for tens of millions, or the intracacies of a will. Like Kevin said, it is about client comfort and impression. We want them to focus on what we are saying, not what we look like. The best way to be "neutral-looking" to the most people is with traditional attire. That means suit and tie for the lawyers. I get away with shirt and tie, but no suit. 95% of the time, I'm in my office and the clients don't see me, but when they do, I have to contribute to the air of quiet competence. I'm hardly a drone. I'm just realistic and mature enough to see how things work. Sure, I could be anti-establishment and try to change the system by taking a stand. Ironically, that in itself is pretty conformist. But it is also futile. I could "shuck the bonds of my oppression", and also take a 50% pay cut. Is wearing a t-shirt to work worth that? Not to me. I'll put up with the inconveniences to earn a nice salary. Then on the weekend, I can wear my t-shirt, go to the dropzone, not worry about how much jumps cost, how many jumps I make and have other people pack for me if I want. I live on the east coast, but in the next 6 months, I'll be at Perris, Rantoul and Eloy. I'll savor the fruits of my labor "working for the man".
