I'm never eating McDonald's again

Recommended Posts

i think this was in a macdonalds but it may have been a burger king - but anyway it doesnt really matter. this woman had been eating a burger from one of the above places when she soon developed a rash around her mouth. quite concerned she went to see the doctor who then aksed if she had been giveing oral sex recently - because the rash was from dodgy sperm. it turned out the burger maker had been puting his spunkinto the food:S:S

Yeah, I have severely cut back on my fast food consumption after reading Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. He tells you nearly everything you don't want to know about the fast food industry and how it has affected our culture.

Yech.

I haven't read it in its entirety, although I have seen excerpts...maybe that'll be the next book I read.

I've had Subway a few times, but I really don't eat much fast food or red meat anymore. It messes up your system, is horrible for the environment, and just makes you fat. I actually got sick the last time I had greasy food from a fast food place.

What's wrong with red meat? It's GREEN meat that messes up your system :)

Haha!!! Don't get me started on red meat. I've never really craved it as much as most Americans, since my father would limit our intake of it as kids (I never developed the taste for it.) He let us have red meat once a month. A big greasy burger never looked as appetizing to me as a chicken breast with tons of onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, etc. I also like Boca burgers much better than hamburgers, and Boca burgers are actually good for you. Any sort of iron or protein you eat red meat for, you can get from many other sources which don't clog your arteries and are easier to digest. Plus, proteins from soy, beans, nuts are better for you than animal protein.

Red meat is no good for you! If everyone decreased their red meat consumption, the world would be a much better place!

Actually, life could still be fat (that's why god made chocolate cake) and full of energy (you don't really get energy from steak.)

I'll try to find some links that will scare you about eating red meat. That stuff just sits in your intestines...for years!

sorry to have hijacked your anti-fast food thread into an anti-red meat thread!
Okay, think of red meat like you do of smoking (or if you don't smoke, than what you've heard others say about smoking.) While a person may enjoy it and have false thoughts of thinking it's "relaxing," it doesn't do any good for you. You may not see the effects of what it does to you body until many years down the road, so you use that as an excuse to enjoy yourself while you're young. Same thing goes for red meat. People just want to enjoy themselves and not worry about it; they don't think of what eating meat does to the environment, and they don't care about what it does to their system. I'm not saying that having it occassionally is bad; I don't think you'll die of colon cancer if you have it once every other month, but most people consume way too much.

I think that is a myth just like the "It takes years for bubblegum to pass through". Eat a pack of gum or two at once and you'll know when it goes through.

Red meat isn't evil. Like most things, it is fine in moderation. The steak-a-day diet isn't very healthy. Likewise, I've seen some damned malnourished vegetarians. A good balance of things is much healthier than either extreme.

I'm a carnivore, but I love salads (big ones, with meat on 'em). The only problem with salads is the point at which you realise you now have the ability to shit through a screen door without getting it dirty.B|

Okay...for years might be an exaggeration, but it does not get digested easily, and stuff does sit around longer than normal.

Well, like I said, if you have it once every other month, you won't die of anything. However, there really isn't much of a benefit to it.

Not eating red meat isn't an extreme. I could never be vegetarian, because I know I wouldn't eat healthy enough to fight off fatigue and sickness. I eat plenty of chicken!

Probably more accurate. ;)

I don't think red meat alone is directly linked to any illness. When a part of a broader unhealthy lifestyle, it contributes negatively, but it is a pretty minor factor.

People can be vegetarian and still get enough nutrients. The problem is that it is difficult and many trendy vegetarians aren't willing to diversify their diets enough to get the nutrients they need. It is easier to avoid red meat and stay healthy if you eat other things like chicken and fish (like you are doing).

I really don't eat a lot of red meat. Probably about once every 3-4 weeks, and not big steaks even then. I just don't subscribe to the belief that it is a big evil either.

The number of people in the US that die of cholesterol, diet or obesity related coronary disease vs the number of people who are made sick by malnutrition isn't even comparable. Vegetarians live longer than meat eaters, have 1/2 the risk of high blood pressure or diabetes, 1/2 the rate of colon cancer and 2/3 the rheumatoid arthritis and prostate cancer. You could argue that you'd rather live 70 years eating meat than 80 years eating soy, but you can't really argue that heavy meat eaters have the same rate of problems as strict vegetarians.

[homer] MMMMMMMMM......LARD......[/homer] :D

Fast food SUCKS! I just spent an entire month living out of a hotel. Still spend 1 or 2 nights per week away from home. I can't stand eating burgers. I do like the McDonalds breakfast. That isn't bad but anything else.....I'll pass. I don't eat red meat that much. I certainly don't avoid it on purpose but I would rather have pork or chicken. It's leaner and better for you. It feels "lighter" too. After I have a big steak I wanna take a nap. :D
I did however have the BEST tenderloin at this ritzy restaurant the other night. Medium Rare with a spread of horseraddish on top. I made the Faux Pas of having white wine with it just because the girlfriend was having Salmon. It was still awesome though. It's amazing what kind of meal you can have for $137!!!! [:/]:D

I wasn't trying to. If you read my posts in context, you'll see that I'm moderate in my read meat consumption. I also say that vegetarians can be healthy, just that it requires special attention to dietary needs.

Bill, I think it's more likely a function of the fact that vegetarians are MUCH more concerned about their health in general. They probably exercise more and take WAY better care of themselves. When I was in the military I got stupid amounts of exercise. I also ate like CRAP but was in very good shape because the exercise balanced out all the cholesterol and fat intake. It's all about balance. ;)
