Remster 30 #26 June 18, 2003 I gave up Will.... Skydiving is safe. Realy it is. All these deaths, accidents, double femurs (do you guys have any idea how hard a femur is?), comas, all these have been invented by the media in its thirst for sentionalism.Remster

skreamer 1 #28 June 18, 2003 But Remi as long as I have a cypres in my rig and an airbag in my car *I* will be OK, because nothing bad could ever happen to me, I am way too careful. Skydiving is NOT safe. If you want to bullshit yourself, family or loved ones, please do, but it is not safe.
 Remster 30 #30 June 18, 2003 And all that BS about the drive to the DZ being more dangerous then the jumps..... Come on. I do not know any skydiver killed on a drive to the DZ (and most people need to drive to a DZ, except the lucky few living in Gethos). There are probably some, somewhere, but I dont knwo them. I know of a few jumpers who died jumping, or will never walk the same way. Thats as close to comparing apples with apples if you want to try to rationalize using car accidents. But go ahead, its safe.Remster
 RichM 0 #31 June 18, 2003 The statistics from skydivingfatalities.net for 2001 in USA (sadly, the web site is no longer kept up to date) show that 1 death occurs for every 187,000 skydives. That can put some sensible perspective on the dangers of the sport for whuffo's who think 1 in 10 jumps kills someone. It's much safer than people think. Statistics also show that over 30% of people die while practising the dangerous activity of sleeping - I am raising the issue with the government and want sleeping banned as it is obviously a zillion times more dangerous than drinking or smoking Rich M
 fasterfaller 0 #32 June 19, 2003 Just stop talking to them until they get over the problem with your hobby . There is no more beautiful place to be and there's only one way to get there. I personally don't like the plane ride, I'm just as happy to get out of the thing and control my own fate (I was once in a plane that wiped out on the runway trying to take off and have known several jumpers who died in crashes on takeoff). But if I won't take the risks, I won't get that beautiful soft weightless rush or air. My kids think it's "cool" that I jump and all their friends think it's "awesome". Whatever. My wife, who made one SL long ago and accompanied an expedition to the top of El Capitan in the glory days of 1980, now doesn't even want to come out to the DZ. She doesn't want to watch. So there's always this subtle pressure to leave it. I would hate to go in on them (I'd hate to go in, period). But if it was THAT dangerous, I wouldn't do it either. Although statistics gives low numbers for the jumps a year, each one is a fatality and could happen to anyone. I have made my mistakes, while flying, exiting, and landing, to all of which have not been an injury, remarkably.. I consider myself to be a enthusiast, but a safe skydiver, and have been doing a lot of reading, asking questions, and practicing all the emergency procedures (as many as I can), yet some people have forgotten the fact that last year's statistics were full of D lic. people under good canopy. That kind of tells me that there are things that are being overlooked. (if this is with the people that have experience, what could we expect to learn?). Mostly I think that the safety is a big part of our sport, yet, we tend to forget the real hazzards that are there every time we get up in the air. This is not a pledge to clip anyone's wings, but to please watch out out there, during exit, during flying, wave and pull safely and please watch your trafic under canopy!!!!!
