How to spin-up a Spectre and live. My first chop. (Pictures)

Recommended Posts

Whoo hoo. I have no idea where this American boogie thread is so I will just wrap it all up with looks like Thursday and Friday are gonna be fun. Haven't jumped the Skyvan in a while. I know I do like pulling 16-20 way chunks out of it though...

Anyone have an extra freefly suit to fit a 5'4" 130 pound skychick?

Mine is in the process of being made. And I wanna do hybrids and freefly. I guess I can always wear a baggy sweatshirt and baggy pants too right? Okay, see you all on Thursday. Anyone wanna carpool from the bay area?

Good job on your first cutaway-pull reserve.

I would like to add a few related comments because your story made me shudder because it reminded me of several fatalities.

Quote

After the biggest skydive for me yet, a formation load out of two Otters, a nice
one-point 35 way that should have made the second point, with me front float on the
trail plane, I tracked away at 5000 feet to 3500, slowed, waved off, and deployed.

On big-ways everyone is supposed to track all the way to their assigned pull altitude. This enhances separation. You should track to say 2500, wave off and pull. You can sit up and de-arch as you wave off to bleed off the speed from you track.

From your break off altitude, it appears that you were on the outside of the formation. When you slow your track at 3500 you run a VERY large risk of someone catching you from behind.

Stopping your track 1000 feet above your pull altitude is a proven way to get killed.

If you were in a middle wave, perhaps you might have had a 3500 pull altitude. That would be unusual for such a small big way. 35-ways are 'small' big-ways. Usually everyone, except the center 8 or so, is told to pull at 2500.

Quote

I yanked both handles just about simultaneously. ….

You were wearing a camera and pulled both handles almost simultaneously. Paul also mentioned why this is not so good. This is another proven way to kill yourself. Ask around about Jan Davis - the one from Hollister not Santa Barbara. Videos of two of her previous mals are available some place.

Quote

Lessons? Practice emergency procedures all the time. Have someone else drill you.

Everyone should do a real deployment, cutaway and pull reserve EVERY time they get a repack (on the ground ;) ). There is no excuse not to.

Quote

I have never practiced cutting away in a hanging harness. I really wish I had, it
probably would have improved my performance.

Not even on student status???

Improper emergency procedures are another proven way to kill yourself.

Quote

I will cutaway and wait a beat before pulling my reserve ripcord next time. Maybe it will be 488 jumps from now. That's how many it took to get to this one.

I definitely have a much clearer understanding why people go in.
Thanks for the education.

( I give up )

I fall like a stone. You do not need baggies to freefly with Deuce. See you Thursday.

Welcome back Nathan!

Yeah, Deuce falls like an ACME anvil. In fact, you should probably jump naked with a light coat of baby oil just to increase your speed and keep up with Deuce;)

I know many more ways other than parachuting to kill myself. I am well aware of the additional risks I take flying camera, and took by not getting stable before deploying my reserve.

That's why I chose to share them, so that my experience might help others.

That's plain rude. Hiding behind not being able to accept PM's is why I am addressing this here.

-and you know nothing about me.

Nothing.

Wrong. She's not a troll. You might not like what she said or how she said it, but she brought up some very valid points.

Not only that, but if you do a search on her other posts, you just might find she speaks with some authority.

Edited to add, she keeps herself anonymous in the hope that people will use good judgement when reading these forums. One would hope an experienced skydiver can spot good advice when they see it regardless of who it comes from.

one would also hope that another experienced skydiver would see the advantage that an experienced skydiver explaining his situation could help many others and not bash him/her for being honest. And to be frank, I don't give a fuck who she/he is and how many jumps they have or experience. As Deuce pointed out, her/his statement was just plain rude.

Although the poster made some valid points, the above comment was out of line and certainly not appreciated in these forums.

No Sunshine is actually nice and easy to get along with. Betsy......she takes a bit more "effort." :D

edited to add: I do believe she may have had her corn cob surgically removed just recently:D;)
Are you insane? Ask Sunshine and she'll even tell you she has a corn cob problem. matter of fact it was a topic of discussion while we were in Eloy. that and the toxic night and the attempted urination on the wind flag amongst other things.;):D

Bwahhhhhhh well considering you have NEVER met me and don't know me personally, your statement is unsubstantiated.
Then again...you're probably right..but then anything worth having...is worth working for:P~~~~~~~
Now back away from the booze....easy like...and leave those damn sheep alone!
Oh and you're right about another thing...I wouldn't get drunk and pee on a pole.:P

See...Betsy would rather lecture you on the dangers of hooking than do that. :D

No, actually betsy only lecturers the idiots that are trying to kill themselves or others around said idiot. I am POSITIVE now that you have never met her, otherwise you'd of known that.

Funny thing is the poster you all are bashing for being frank has more jumps then probally 1/3's of the active posters on here combined. I know her/him to be quite knowledgeable about more aspects of jumping then almost everyone that visits. Just since you like a member of the community more then Gerinmo, don't discredit her/him on that merit.

There is a lot of truth to the post and I can bet that if someone posted that on Rec. there would be no shortage of poeple that would be willing to take shots at them.

I've made mistakes and I thank the people that call me out on it. If everyone just told me how great I handled a situation that I really screwed up by getting into, I'd be pissed. On a cutaway I don't want to be told great job for pulling the handles, I want to be told what I did WRONG so I can learn.
Yesterday is history
And tomorrow is a mystery
