Muenkel 0 #1 June 21, 2003 It was supposed to be real shit weather day, but when I woke up early, the sun was shining.I made a beeline out to the dz and saw canopies in the sky. I was psyched. Got on manifest for my C-1. Went thru my training, no problem. TLO's are toe taps and release by the jumpmasters and pull at 5000. However, due to the ceiling we would leave the plane at 10000. I thought, I could do this. So we start the jump, arch good, alti awareness good, pp good, toe taps good. Then, they released and holy shit. I started spinning so fast, my jumpmasters could not redock with me. I tried to correct but had a total brain fart, forgot to arch hard, relax and redo the toe taps. I am spinning like a top and losing alti fast. Due to the speed of my spins it was difficult to read the altimeter. I wound up pulling at 3000 with line twists. Luckily I got the twists out before 2500. Now the canopy control: I was so focused on what I had just done that I was not concentrating on what I still needed to do. Listened for the instructor, tells me to flare, I flare...but, for some assinine reason I let the flare up. This results in a pretty hard landing and not a PLF. I just laid on my back thankful I was on the ground. Meanwhile the instructor is calling out to me over the radio to see if I was OK. I'm not hearing him because my ears are plugged and the andrenaline was rushing. He's making a mad dash to me, wondering if I bounced. Finally I heard him on the radio "Chris, are you alright?" I give a thumbs up and sit up. I get back to the hangar and obviously I failed the jump. I just wanted to get in my car and head for home. But I couldn't do it. I knew if I left then, I would have to dwell on what happened for a week. It took every ounce of guts I had in me to put my name back on manifest. 2nd try, 1 hour later. This time the ceiling is 9000'. I'm doing everything in my power to smile on the flight up. I was determined to make this jump work...and it did! Two minor mistakes, I turned my head when I pulled the ripcord so the jumpmaster made sure I was stable. 2nd mistake was I should have pulled my toggles down a couple more inches during my flair. Hard PLF as a result. But I did it and I am cleared for level C-2. My instructors were pumped and there were many hugs given when I got back to the hangar. Gave Bytch a call when I got home and she listened while I talked thru the whole experience. She renewed my confidence. Thanks Bytch.I'm taking a day off tomorrow because the weather is supposed to suck and quite honestly I am really sore. But back to the dz next weekend. I refuse to give up!
