Help With Sleep

Recommended Posts

It seems my body is trying to sleep, yet my brain won't let me. Its been almost a week now since I had a restful nights sleep.[:/][:/]
Anyone have any good recipes/concoctions/exersizes/meditations (anything) to help with sleeping more soundly?

Even though Darth Vader gave you a pausible suggestion, I would recommend a long warm shower/bath, followed by a small glass of warm milk, and then Mr. Cruise's movie.....

Good luck! and blue skies

This used to happen to me all the time, I was also a little stressed out. I just called some buddies a few hours before I went to bed and just found out what was going on. Talking about it really helps. If that somehow fails, Try:

Warm Milk
Turkey or bread right before bed.

I was just about to recomend running or swimming in the morning. Lifting weights will put you in lala land come bedtime too. Take bill's words as words of wisdom though, don't lift weights etc too short before going to bed. Your muscles will be twitching and spasming all night :S. Doesn't help the lactic acid from clearing.

Hey there! I've definately had those kinds of weeks also. For me, it's usually caused by having a lot on my mind. Exercising is actually a great remedy. Just like Bill said! Helps a lot when it's time for bed. I also write ... if there's a whole lot on my mind, and I can't get to sleep, I just write it all out. No reason, I just write a letter to some imaginary person discussing all that's on my mind hoping it helps relieve some and it usually works for me! I guess you can write or call someone for real, but I'm not that open to be telling people about all that stuff:S Good luck, and let us know if you get any sleep!!

Trailer 11/12 was the best. Thanks for the memories ... you guys rocked!

Hi, Vanilla...

Sorry to hear you're dealing with insomnia. Yeuccccccccchhhhh...

So, when I've had several days of sleeplessness, there is usually lots of pressure going on - real or just in my mind doesn't matter....I do several things in this order (trying one, and moving to the next if it doesn't work).

1. All caffeine and high sugar content stuff stops at 6 pm...

2. Write out a list of things you're thinking about. Get it out of your head, and onto paper. Once it's outside, you can usually manage to keep it outside.

3. If writing about it doesn't work (and sometimes it doesn't), I lay there in bed, look at each thing which pops into my head, mentally "wrap" it up like a christmas present, and tuck it away on a mental shelf, promising myself that tomorrow I will think about it. Right now, it's sleep time, and that's the priorty. I remind myself that brilliant strokes of genius generally do not occur when I am this tired, and that gnawing at the problem at night is not a way to produce the desired outcome (a resolution I can live with). Furthermore, there are things to do during the day - worry is one of them - which interfere with things necessary at night (sleep, relaxation). If something needs to be addressed, midnight is not the time to do so...tomorrow at 9 am may be, but 9pm is not, nor bedtime.

4. If I still can't sleep - I get up, and do something distracting and which produces immediate success...clean the fridge, vaccuum, tidy...something that I can look at and say "there. I did that". Then I try to sleep again.

5. If all else fails, and to break the cycle of "I'm so tired I can't even sleep", I use TylenolPM or ExcederinPM. Worst case, when I haven't slept in a long while, I have other, stronger prescription stuff which I use, but I try to limit that to a very infrequent occurrance.

Hope it helps...I hate being where you are. And I get there unfortunately often...

eek, steer clear of the medication unless you've been to a doctor and had several opinions that you actually need it. Even tylenol PM is habit forming and can send ripple effects through your sleep patterns for days to come. The sleep induced medicinally is not as fitful as real, natural sleep.

It's not a short-term solution, but learning to meditate can really help to calm your mind and let it sleep. Start with one of the "focus on your breath" tapes. I'm not a serious meditation person at all, which is probably why it works for me :P

Um, that's why I indicated I have "other, stronger prescription stuff"...

As to TylenolPM, as far as I'm aware, it is not habit forming, at least physically. And I certainly am not addicted to it...but thanks for the concern...

While I totally agree with you, no sleep is not a recommended option, either.

Hi Vanilla...it's me, Vanilla.

It's funny that you wrote this post as I have had insomnia since I was a child. [:/] I think that this happens to perfectionists as I tend to obsess over things. (Maybe it's some kind of Vanilla requirement/trait or something.) I hope that you find a nice solution. Please pm me if you do, and I'll try it, too!
