SPAM capacity reached...

Recommended Posts

I don't check my dz.com email very often. When I did check it recently, it wasn't at the capacity it was today, but I decided to see how long it would take. It didn't take very long. So, initially, it was partly by accident, and my own twisted experiment. The trash folder is holding all spam, and by my estimate before I deleted it all, it was less than a few weeks of activity.:o

Anyway, in case any of you were wondering...

HH: Sorry for pigging out on space...I'll make it up to you next time I visit PayPal. ;) I'll pay closer attention from now on.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

What do you use your dz.com address for? I really dont use mine at all and get zero spam. So you probably put the address out there somewhere not good. I made a hotmail account that I only use when I need to give an email address and I dont trust whoever I'm giving it to. I only check it about once or twice a month, but it's pretty much always completely full of spam when I do check it.

I use yahoo for my regular mail. I set up my own spam folder/filters. They catch about 10 times as much as yahoo's built in bulk folder. I just dont understand how I can take one look at an email and know it's spam and yahoo cant.

I don't use my dz.com address for anything either, except with a couple people here. However, I recall HH mentioning that "spiders" are able to see to the "basic profile" where for a while, my email address read as gawain .... @ .... dropzone .... com. It was only after using the advanced filters and changing that to read: gawain at dropzone ... etc.

Actually, I like HH spam assassin solution, it makes for pretty easy filtering. Like you though I have many email addys which I use for different things and my true "home" email is spam free.

I think we've been the victims of at least a couple brute force spam attacks in the past.

Basically they start with a@dropzone.com, then aa@dropzone.com, then ab@dropzone.com . . . well, you get the idea. It's not a very fulfilling way for them to do things particularly here -- works much better on larger systems with more users such as AOL.

As long as we don't see too much of it -- and I know I haven't and my name is really easy in this type of attack -- then there's probably not too much to worry about.
