diablopilot 2 #1 June 25, 2003 So I figgure there may be one or two of you out there that might be able to help me with this, I have a USB compact flash reader, that works on my old offec computer running 98SE, but I can not get it to work on my new home built box running XP. The power light comes on at start up, but when XP begins to boot it goes out and stays out. There is no listing for USB in the device manager, and I have not been able to get any indication that the box is reading the CF card.... WTF?---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

It would be under "disk drives" or "mass storage devices" or "unknown." When it appears, delete it. Disconnect the device and reconnect it. It should start up its "new hardware found" dialouge. When that's done, you should see an E: drive (or whatever) that is the new device.
PhillyKev 0 #3 June 25, 2003 There's also usually a setting in the BIOS to enable or disable USB support. It may be disabled.
Magistr8 0 #4 June 25, 2003 it's important to remember when installing usb devices to keep them unplugged until the installation disk asks for you to plug it in. It is at that time that the PC initializes the port that has the device attached and allows for proper use of the peripheral. "Impossible is a word to be found only in the dictionary of fools." Compact flash and other card readers are supported natively under Win2K and XP, no installation disk is needed... make sure USB ports are enabled in the bios (PM me if you don't know how to do this), then follow Bill Von's advice... it should work... Cornholio 0 #6 June 25, 2003 All the above is true, but it could be that XP just gave up on installing the driver. Check under "Other Devices" in Device Manager and see if there is something called "USB controller/device " or the dreaded "Unknown device" If it is, go to the manufacturers web site and get their drivers and try to re-install the driver. True, USB is native to XP, but some manufacturers have special device drivers to enable FULL support of their devices that the built-in drivers don't cover. For instance, my Canon Digital camera is that way. XP sees a USB device, even correctly identfies it, but it still asks for a driver disk for it to operate correctly. Butthead: Whoa!
