Pops up adds and Windows Messenger Blocking

Recommended Posts

If it's a windows messenger pop up you will need to go into your computer and turn the messenger service off. I believe it is: start, programs, accessories, system tools, services and then scroll down to messenger and choose to turn it off completely. That will stop the windows messenger pop up, all others will need to be stopped by a program like was mentioned above. Do yu have a firewall up? Zonealarm is free and knocks a lot of unwanted stuff out. Another useful freebie is Spybot search and destroy for getting rid of spywear and such.

Turning off the messenger service will work for certain low-tech popups, however most sites employ workarounds via javascript. PopUp Stopper ([http://www.popupstopper.com/product_downloads.html])will block these and they have a free version. The software is excellent. One thing to bear in mind is it will limit the number of explorer windows you can open at once unless you hold down the CTRL key or disable the software when opening another window intentionally. Also, you may consider going out to Kazaa and downloading Norton Personal Firewall - gotta love getting a fully licensed software product like that for free ;-).

Anyone got any free software to block this shit? I swear they design it that way just so others can sell a program to block it. I get all these Windows Messenger popups advertising their block software. They're the only problem I have! Grrrrrrrr.......

Boy, you hit the nail on the head there Chris.

These pop ups are not coming from the 'net, as you think they are. They are internal.

Did you install anything recently? (GameSpy is a nasty install. Turns on messenger every time, and it doesn't get turned off by uninstalling the program that started all the crap).

Prepare for a registry hack to get rid of 'em.

I've got all that up to "services". I don't see that under system tools. Hmmmm Thanks for the help.

Here, use this program. This will safely remove it from XP, and it might work for 2000. I have not tested it with that OS. And No, it is not a virus. Open it up in notepad and read it if you don't belive me.

And Phree, can you elaborate on how blocking DNS port 53 will stop unwanted pop-ups ? Even if you only had port 80 open, you would still see the pop-ups.

DOH!....sorry....XP. I never had this problem until I upgraded to XP so thought everyone would know that as some sort of part of XP.

It is nearly impossible to remove Windows messenger (not MSN Messenger) from XP. You can disable it, but it seems to find a way to turn itself back on. The best way is to remove the program and service. Use that program in my previous post.

Edit: to change the word MSN to Windows.

Right click "my network places" then "properties" then right click "local area connection" then "properties" then "advanced" then enable the network connection firewall.

This will only work if you have cable or dsl. If you have a modem this wont work.

Under XP - Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services - find "Messenger", double-click, hit 'stop' and set the "startup type" to "disabled".

Also, go Start / Control Panel/ Add - Remove software, and look for a program called 'gator' or 'comet cursor'.- remove it.

No, not MSN messenger the chat program like AOL IM. I'm talking about Windows Messenger...those grey screens popping up in the middle of the screen.

Turn on off the messenger servive

Pop up blocker sucks, I'll PM you an FTP site you can take spyblocker from.

Purchase a NAT Router so you're behind a firewall and it also allows multiple computers to be connected rather than just the single computer connected directly to the internet where the evil hackers are lurking.

Sorry.. its not port 53 (can you tell I'm in the middle of a DNS project at work? :S) you need to block port 135.

Check this out for a rundown of the issue: http://www.practical-tech.com/infrastructure/i11042002.htm

Oh, right right... but this will only block the messenger RPC messages, not the popups from web sites or installed spyware. Get Adware or SpyWare and install that to remove those internal popups. Use Mozilla or a pop-up killer program to get rid of web pop-ups.
