LAKE WALES, FL -- AT&T GSM & GPRS Phone Service

Recommended Posts

Ok, I don't need to hear any snickering from billvon or any other cell phone wonks about how crappy AT&T GSM & GPRS service is in general -- I already know -- believe me.

What I do need to know is what the service is like at Lake Wales, Florida -- home of the 2003 Nationals (get it?). Can a person get a connection, does SMS work, does GPRS work?

I always thought it would be really cool if we could convince everyone in skydiving to join ONE plan (like Nextel for instance) and get some great "company" rate. Also, the Nextel direct connect feature would totally rock for staying in touch, emergencies and stuff -- at least it did for me during the construction phase of DCA. Kinda sucked indoors though.

Anyway, I'm on a huge contract with AT&T for GSM and GPRS. Right now, with the instrument I have (SE T68is) the services suck ass, but I'm told it gets better with a different phone. Hopefully the phone of my dreams (Moto v600) will make it's rumored release date in September.

Everyone with the same company and one of those PCS-PCS free plans like Sprint & Nextel have? Think of all the drunk dialing money they'd lose!

If you have existing AT&T service, call them, give them zip codes and area codes. GSM coverage in Florida is pretty good overall, due to networks built by Aerial and PowerTel (Now part of T-Mobile). AT&T, I couldn't tell ya. If you have existing T-Mobile service, call them and ask. Basic call coverage won't be a problem, but GPRS network enhancements may not reach that far outside of the "metro" areas of Tampa, Miami, Jax, etc (if you consider them metro).

Call them and ask? Is ya kiddin'?

They're telling me my service if FINE right where I am and I know it sucks.

I was hoping for a slightly less biased opinion of the actual service rather than simply a company line.

Are you in Florida right now?? Don't ask them "how" their service is, ask them about feature availability. The features you want are network dependent, asking about them, versus "how" well they work may get a different response. Maybe...of course, GSM sucks anyway... :P

I have two AT&T GSM phones - the Nokia 6200 and the Siemens S46. Here in the Chicago area, GSM rocks and is by far the best service I have ever had - and it even works out at Skydive Chicago. Why two phones? Well, since GSM is not everywhere, I just swap the SIM card into the S46 and I can use either the GSM or TDMA signals ( you need to have a mutli-ban plan). These are probably the two best phones I have ever had or used and I have been using cell phones for 11 years now, and change the phone at least once a year. Depending on my next job, I will most likely get a Pocket PC Phone for the GSM network.

So Bill doesn't like GSM? Funny, I had a friend that worked for Sprint and said the same thing - however, when I used Sprint it was one of the worst services, along with PrimeCo that I ever used. If I was to change, I would only switch over to Cingular.

Edit to add - when I was in Lake Wales my AT&T TDMA phone worked fine.

That used to be my husband's home DZ until we moved to Indiana. We had AT & T in florida and always had a decent signal there. Florida is pretty much saturated with cell towers so you shouldn't have a problem. Hope this helps. Oh we had the Nokia 8210 GSM in Florida
