mixedup 0 #1 January 19, 2012 Q1 What do you recommend re chest mount for an altimeter (e.g. Altimaster II)? Some I've seen: LookMa Wedge Mudflap Alti-Mount - http://www.chutingstar.com/newgear_en/wedge-mudflap-alti-mount.html Altimount - http://www.chutingstar.com/newgear_en/altimount.html Chest/Hip Altimeter Mount - http://www.chutingstar.com/newgear_en/chest-hip-altimeter-mount.html http://www.square1.com/manufacturers/square1/p231.asp#LongAltiPillow http://www.square1.com/manufacturers/square1/p231.asp#DeluxeAltiMount http://www.paragear.com/templates/parachutes.asp?group=181&level=2&parent=5 (Item: I1142P CUSHION MOUNT) Q2 Also what is the trade off re mudflap mount (just above handles) and chest strap? Should one be concerned about the mudflap mounts (e.g. LookMa) obscuring visibility of your handle? Are the chest strap better here, but perhaps a little more effort re having to secure every jump (i.e. as you take your chest strap off) Q3 And for a mudflap mount, which side do you recommend? Left/Right? Personal choice?Parachutist Game IOS Android YouT
danornan 79 #2 January 19, 2012 LookMa Wedge Mudflap Alti-Mount for me on the left side. It is out of the way, always there when I need to look and I don't worry about forgetting it. I've been using it for as long as I can remember and never had a problem seeing it or my handle. For me, a wrist mount is in the way and just one more thing to be concerned about. After several 1,000 jumps, I really don't spend a lot of time looking at my altimeter. I have it when I need it, but mostly rely on an audible and my eyes. Oh, and I know Frank, who maked the LookMa and he's a super guy who skydives and manufactures many great quality products.Dano
monkycndo 0 #3 January 19, 2012 I prefer a mudflap mount on the left side. I wear a wrist altimeter as well as a back up. I've had to go silver and had no problems getting to the handle. I travel a fair bit to jump and didn't like the mount options out there because they were a pain to put on and take off to get my rig in my gear bag. So I made my own. It just slips under the mudflap and hooks on the top lip. Takes about 3 seconds to install/remove. Made it out of a plastic that stays rigid during normal use, but will bend if you have a hard landing. I have one model that holds my Galaxy and one that holds my AltiTrack. The AltiTrack mount has a window in the plate so I can read and access the alti's display without removing it from the mount. I'm also working on a GoPro mount that uses the same system of just sliding under the mudflap.50 donations so far. Give it a try. DSE 5 #4 January 19, 2012 I'm a fan of the LookMa wedge mount. It doesn't hurt others if you bump (carbon fiber hurts). It can be right or left (you specify). They slip on/off very fast. Our school uses them for most wingsuit students, whether they want a Galaxy, Altitrack, or VISO on the mudflap. My personal rigs have the mount on the left side, a couple of our rental units are either sided.
wmw999 2,588 #5 January 19, 2012 I've always used a chest altimeter; I have my own design of mount that suits me well. Very simple to make at home with super cheap materials. It only works for an Altimaster 2, but those are bigger anyway. It's very non-rigid (i.e. unlikely to hurt in the event of landing on it), but doesn't fold down like old pillow mounts can. I've enclosed a drawing. Been using one since the 1970's. The rubber bands last about 3-5 years. Wendy P.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
