Treasure Planet Sky surf Scene

Recommended Posts

Hello All

I recently seen treasure planet for the first time, in the begining there is a cool scene where the kid rides a solar powered skyboard, rides it way up high, then free falls pulling some pretty cool stunts. I thought it looked like disney did there homework for the scene. Anyone else have any other comments? Look to fake, or very real?

In the case of Tarzan, it was skateboard legend, Tony Hawks. He also made several trips to the studio and press junkets to publicize it.

As for Treasure Planet, I'm not sure there was any specific individual that the moves were being modeled after. I believe it was X-Games footage they were looking at, but don't quote me on it.

I now have an email out to the Corporate Archivist to find out if it was anyone specific. We'll see what he has to say about it.

And here's the official answer from The Walt Disney Studio Archivist.

Paul:

I spoke to John Ripa who was the supervising animator on Jim Hawkins. He said the Solar Surfing was not based on any particular thing. They studied film and magazines and photos of skateboarding, windsurfing, skysurfing, and snow boarding.

Well, a mix to be certain, but definately the majority of it was Tony Hawk. They made a REALLY big freekin' deal about it during the publicity junkets for the movie.

Also, do you remember the McDonald's commercial for the Tarzan Happy Meal toys? No? Ok, well, they had Tony Hawk in them.
