Galen 0 #3 June 26, 2003 I thought the industry itself was going to go after a few token big time downloaders. Didn't know the courts deemed it illegal. Then again I've been too busy to follow the news the past few days. Respect the Dolphin
Galen 0 #4 June 26, 2003 True. I guess they just haven't made the peer-to-peer software illegal. Or have they..? Respect the Dolphin
indyz 1 #5 June 27, 2003 QuoteTrue. I guess they just haven't made the peer-to-peer software illegal. Or have they..? They haven't. They can't. However, downloading copyrighted music/software/videos with peer-to-peer software is illegal, and always has been.
ChasingBlueSky 0 #6 June 27, 2003 QuoteUh, technically, no. It's been illegal for quite some time -- since before .mp3s were invented in fact. It's called a violation of Copyright. I understand copyright protection, but I am not a fan of the RIAA. I've been tempted to download the songs off of every cd that I own (over 800 cds now) and let them come after me and prove I did something wrong._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... It's called a violation of Copyright. oh yea duh, I didnt even think That. as far as peer to peer . I dont really see much difference in copying a cd for a friend or sharing the file.... the only excpetion I see is that File sharing can be done on a MUCH LARGER SCALE thus reducing profits etcMy photos My Videos
fundgh 0 #8 June 27, 2003 Is it illegal to upload music that is not yours? Is it more or less illegal than down loading?...FUN FOR ALL!
Frodo 0 #9 June 27, 2003 QuoteI thought the industry itself was going to go after a few token big time downloaders.Or, more precisely - uploaders. From CNN: Quote[RIAA] will begin Thursday to search Internet file-sharing networks to identify users who offer "substantial" collections of mp3 music files for downloading. It expects to file at least several hundred lawsuits seeking financial damages within eight to 10 weeks as it tries to put an end to music piracy. ... The RIAA said its lawyers will file lawsuits initially against people with the largest collections of music files they can find online. U.S. copyright laws allow for damages of $750 to $150,000 for each song offered illegally on a person's computer, but Sherman said the RIAA will be open to settlement proposals from defendants. Well... I guess since I'm not sharing anything, just downloading (yes I'm a very selfish netizen ), then I don't have to worry too much [:D]
nathaniel 0 #10 June 27, 2003 Amen to that. The most popular peer-to-peer "software" out there is called the Internet Protocol. Sold by dozens of vendors, given away by others. If you're reading this chances are you already own a copy. iow, peer-to-peer isn't going away any time soon... nathanielMy advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. Galen 0 #11 June 27, 2003 Most of the stuff I've downloaded are songds from CD's I already own. My software to convert wav to mp3 doesn't seem to want to work so I've taken the easy way and just downloaded. Respect the Dolphin
cptfunky 0 #12 June 27, 2003 downloading music is NOT illegal! at least not yet. But if you offer copyrightprotected music for download to other people, than it IS illegal. I'm a musician myself and of course i'd also like to get the money for the songs that i've written. But if the big music industries is trying to outlaw us all, just because they now only earn half of the millions and billions, they've earned before, then i give a fuck for this! IMO this whole mp3-download thing is a very good way to spread your music, especially if you make other music than mainstream. As long as the music industry is acting like a monopolist it is ok to d/l mp3s for nothing. Some people say: Pirating MP3s is communism. My answer: Well, could be worse. Malev 0 #13 June 27, 2003 Quote mp3. ILLEGAL? MP3s are not illegal - MP3 is simply an encoding format for audio files. Downloading copyrighted material without permission has always been illegal, and this applies whether it be MP3/WAV/Ogg Vorbis etc. However, a lot of people (the music industry included) blur the line between the two. nacmacfeegle 0 #14 June 27, 2003 Legal, or illegal...where? What justice system would I be prosecuted under if I downloaded a 'copyrighted' MP3 from a guy based in Bhutan, via my Nokia and laptop whilst on my yacht in international waters , for example..... And where would I spend my jail time?-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me.
