Ron 10 #28 June 27, 2003 Driver Charged In Bicyclist's Death Published: Jun 27, 2003 TAMPA - An avid skydiver and head of a parachuting company died Wednesday after a motorist struck and killed him on Bayshore Boulevard near a ramp to Davis Islands, authorities said. Ian Bellis, 40, of 401 Channelside Walkway was stopped on his bicycle on a crosswalk leading to the promenade about 7:45 p.m. when a 2002 Chevrolet Impala struck him, police said. Police on Thursday charged the driver, Joseph R. Kinz Jr., 55, of 4222 W. Bayview Ave., with careless driving. He lost control, jumped the curb and traveled about 150 feet along the grass before striking Bellis, police said. Kinz told police Wednesday he was driving to Tampa General Hospital to visit his mother and did not know he was off the road. A passing physician and nurse provided medical aid to Bellis, but he was pronounced dead at TGH. Records show that Bellis was president of Aerodyne Research Corp., 5613 Interbay Blvd., which designs, manufactures and distributes sport and military parachutes.
